quick question , if you buy a set top box , will it deliver rte digital to an older portable tv or do you need a tv which has mpeg4 along with the set top box

also , i have a plasma which i bought in northern ireland last year , at 1st i could get rte digital through the aerial but all i have now is a blank screen and audio , will a set top box suffice or do i need to change the tv for an irish model ?

Providing you have either a scart or HDMI connector on your television, no matter what, it will receive the RTE signals as the TV is only acting as a monitor/display.

The reason you used to get RTE in digital was that prior to 1st Aug 2008, there was a test signal in MPEG2 that was then changed to the current broadcasting standard of MPEG 4. The plasma is proberbly a Panasonic that does not comply with the EBU standards, just their own interpretation of the UK D book. Since Oct 2010, RTE changed to codes that Panasonic do not implement, although they should/could. You will need an update from Panasonic for that (unlikely) or a STB. Hard luck on that.

Any STB that is Saorview certified will work fully with the new service (that has been running since 2008), with some FeeviewHD STBs being able to receive the service also. Non-certified products could well work for you, but that will not be guaranteed.

All "Freeview HD" boxes will work, some less than perfect (no TG4 or Tv3 teletext, channels in 800s instead of 100s and 200s). The old type teletext is expected to end in 2012 or 2013

Non-HD "Freeview" boxes don't work at all.

Just like with Sky and UPC or a DVD player, once you have a compatible setbox then Digital, Analogue, MPEG2, MPEG4, MHEG5 etc on the actual TV is irrelevant as it's only a video screen. The HD channels will be downconverted for SCART (old CRT or cheap LCDs) and all channels work on HDTV via HDMI cable.

    Hi,
I heard about Saorview a few days ago and decided to autotune the tv to pick it up. I've got the digital radio stations fine but for the DTV all I have is a blank screen, no sound. The tv is a HD LG but, here's the catch, it was bought in the North :P Is Saorview out of the question or is there someway of picking it up without buying a set top box. Actually would a Saorview set top box even be compatable with a UK tv?
Not sure if this is in the right place but help is appreciated!

As explained if the TV has a scart of HDMI and even component then a set top box will work with any tv uk or irish or europe.

And if you buy a labgear RF modulator you can pipe the signal round the house to other tv's but will only be able to watch same channel everywhere but better than nothing.

    gb--

Is the sound output of the rf modulator stereo or mono ?

Cheers, set top box it is then...! Would another box connected to a different tv mean you can watch two different saorview channels? Kinda like sky multiroom? I get what you mean about setting up like an eye for the tv, dont think I would bother with that.

Yes, another box to another TV means different channel can be watched on that TV.
