Coeliac and vegan

    Hi there folks.

I am a coeliac and a recently born again vegetarian.:) I had been a veggie for years but went back on meat until recently.

I am looking into the possibility of turning vegan for both health and ethical reasons. However, I am unsure of how feasible this is considering I am a coeliac as well. Will I basically be limiting myself to very very little variety?

Is there anyone in the same boat as me who has successfully given this a go and succeeded? Thanks.

With all the gluten-free bread, pasta and that available, I think it's fine. The only problem is eating out. Here's some blogs I follow, if you google 'gluten free vegan', you can find a lot more.

It's debatable how necessary or beneficial it is to get the base of your calorie needs from grains anyway so I wouldn't worry too much. My advice is to up your fat intake a little (max 30%!!) and eat loads of fruit.

i was kinda on a diet like this for awhile. got a food intolerance test done and it said i was intolerant to milk, eggs, wheat, rice etc etc

i felt lost but mainly because i had to learn again what i can and cant eat and also because i cant cook to save my life! haha!

best of luck, im sure you can do it, just takes time and patience, cooking skills a plus! :)

yeh so much "health food shop" stuff is gluten/casein free and suitable for vegans that you should have plenty of options, you just need to shop around. e.g. i know some if not all of the Sheese range is gluten free http://www.buteisland.com/ In fact i've noticed this more and more over the past 2-3 years, gluten free and vegan seem to be going hand in hand.

My dad is coeliac, and i'm vegatarian, but eat little dairy, and i often cook for him, we make out ok! The guardian and BBC website are quite good for clear vegan, gluten free, vegatarian recipes, e.g. their recent dairy free baking section http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/mar/12/mocha-fig-muffins-recipe-lepard, that receipe obviously has plain flour, but i reckon you could subsitute with soy flour or rice flour.
