    Derek Reese
in Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles (no build up or warning!)
    Mara, Jackson and Shane
    in The Shield (really shocking)
    Charlie
in Lost (a fan favourite character so it was hard to watch)
    Ben (Brendan Fraser)
in Scrubs. Didn't see that one coming, and if you didn't shed a tear, you're not human.
    Renee
in 24. It lead into one of the best runs of episodes in all 8 seasons.
    Rita
    in Dexter. Nuff said.
    Ryan Chapelle
in 24. First (and best) use of the silent clock. Unbelievable.

I have to agree with Mr E about
    Ryan Chappelle
in 24. For me, this is the greatest TV death. An excellent episode which had me believing whole that he wouldnt actually die, that Jack would get him out of it somehow. And the scene when he tries to kill himself was heartbreaking. The emotion, the tension, the drama made this death very very memorable and powerful. Brilliantly portrayed by the two actors.

    Honourable mention too for
    George Mason
    in 24. To quote
    Mason
in the plane when he said "You get to go out in a blaze of glory, one of the greatest heroes of all time, leave your troubles behind"

    Ralphie
in The Sopranos. That whole scene was riveting.

Lost - Not so much when, but how
    Locke
died. Especially knowing what happens towards the end of the series. Makes it really tragic, and even harder to watch on repeats.
    24 -
Mason, Chapelle, Palmer, Tony(ish), Renee, Hassan
were all great deaths. They really do a good job of killing characters off :)
Sarah Connor Chronicles - When they killed off
    Derek
, i was in shock. Literally out of no where, in a random episode, with no 'last stand' or last speech to keep fighting. Just dead. Was probably the most shocking and sudden death in any show i've ever watched.
    Battlestar Galactica - -
    Dualla's
death. I knew something was up in the episode, but hadn't expected anything that serious. And then bam

    The Wire:
    Omar
That just came out of nowhere. He was my favourite character and everything.

This thread should be split into two; greatest deaths on 24 and greatest deaths on all the other shows! 24 is in a league of its own when it comes to providing the audience with great deaths. The greatest (IMO) were
Chappelle, Teri, Palmer, Renee, Mason, Curtis and Paval (the assassin in Day 8 who Jack pretty much ripped to pieces)

    As for other shows,
    Brian (Ice Truck Killer)
    in Dexter,
    Brad
    in Prison Break,
    Mark Greene
    in ER and
    Sam
    in Life on Mars

I have to agree with those who have said
    Chappelle's
on 24 being TV's greatest death.
