need advice re: CV for social work/child protection job

    I am seeking employment in social work/child protection, which is a very "low tech" sector where people are mostly employed by the state, religious organisations and charity bodies. Recruitment processes have in the past been quite old-fashioned and focused mainly on skills and qualifications.

    As a result I have always used a fairly basic, plain and simple layout for my CV-i.e. just listing all my education/training and briefly describing all the jobs I've held (this is mandatory for child protection purposes) and I manage to squeeze this onto 2 pages (Referees extra) because I always thought interviewers wanted brevity, but I recently saw a job ad that requested a CV of "no more than 8 pages" which seemed a little long to me!

    Anyway, this time round I am not getting called for interviews. I know that competition is more fierce than the last time I was looking, but I'm also four years more experienced than last time and I think that the presentation of my CV may be at least partly to blame.

    I would appreciate any advice! What are professional employers looking for? Do people use the American Resume style now with the sections that detail personal profile/achievements/aims? How long is acceptable/too long? If they ask you to fill in an application form (common enough) should you also send your CV?
