New brakes pads problem - high pitched sqweel

Got new brake pads fitted today. On the way home I thought I got a funny smell. Then heard the most almighty sqweel - like a nymphomanic banshee, almost unbearable. This continued intermittently. I found when I just kept my foot tipping the pedal it was OK. When I got off the motorway onto a quiet road I gave it a bit of a 'brake test'. All well the last 18 miles or so but lowish-speed country roads.

Looks like the passenger-side front was the issue - strong smell of burning (brake pad I suppose). The wheel and caliper seem quite a bit hotter than the other one and a slight oily residue is on the alloy.

I'm hoping it was just a 'bedding-in' issue but not sure at this point. Has anyone experienced something similar? Is this unusual?

Probably no copper grease used. Go back to the garage and get them to fix the problem. Shouldn't be a safety issue.

Sounds like the pads are down to the audible limit and they forgot to change them.. Its happened before and im sure you wont be the last!

The other thing is it could be a build up of brake dust, might be worth sticking the power washer in there..

It's normally one of three things :

No Copper Grease on the Pads
Your Disc has a lip which is causing the new Pads to vibrate - the disc would need to be put on a lathe, but it's cheaper to get new ones.
The caliper wasn't reassembled properly with pins and plates put where they should be (If your caliper comes apart like some BMW ones, etc)

It's a 08 Legacy. Was sorting a warranty issue as well so it's a main dealer. Going back is an inconvenience at this time and they've been pretty crap recently, I'll be hopping mad if they f****d up.

Maybe, but if anything there seems excess residue on the alloy,

I know these things happen and I'm not one who demands sun-moon-and-stars because I'm handing over my coveted 'hard-earned' money. I have a friend goes on like that a bit and it drives me potty.

My time is important to me tho - having to take time away from work or spend half-a-day hanging around a garage pisses me off. My other yoke is giving trouble at the moment as well - seemingly undiagnosable starting problems. So it's not been a good week vehicle-wise!

Def not normal even if you had badly scored worn and lipped disks (which if you had they should've changed) should not be smelly or hot bring it back

+1 This happens a lot more than people think.

I'd tell her to get a grip or you'll dump her as you have enough problems with the Legacy :p

Seriously though not a proper job by your description take it back pity you don't have someone in the know who could give it a look over. To see exactly what is wrong because they probably wont fess up to a mistake.

I've had a few occasions where I've had to bring a car back to the garage on a second occasion....

Or maybe I'm spaced out on reefers :-)

A question on that PaintDoc? What do you mean by 'No copper grease on the pads', do you mean on the guide pins??

Probably on the back of the pads, it can stop sequels in some cars, most modern cars don't benefit from it.

Not really to be honest. Sometimes people just make mistakes. Shouldn't happen often but sometimes it does. We don't even know the exact problem yet anyway.

I get annoyed when people bull**** me and aren't honest about things. If someone makes a genuine mistake and are doing their best then fair enough.

I would bring the car to another garage and get a report on what they find. The return to the dealer who fitted the brakes with the findings.
