I am involved in buying a property in Dublin at the moment. It is an executor sale and I have just discovered that Probate has only just been applied for! Does anyone know how long this is taking at the moment (through a solicitor)?

Depends. If the solr has got the stuff together correctly anywhere from 3-6 months in my experience. If there are any errors in the submitted documents (and far too often there are), then a good bit longer.

Thanks Hippo, so if I have been told it will be about 6 weeks, thats just a big fat lie?

No. There is always the possibility that the matter could be expedited by a Probate Officer. Whether or not your circumstances are warranting of this is another issue...

I will not be dealing with it. It will be the vendors solicitor. Maybe having a buyer waiting will be enough to speed things up. Also I have no idea how much work has been done up to this stage. I can only hope for the best I guess. Thanks for the replies.

Probate office has now been contacted and they are giving an estimate of 7 weeks so fingers crossed.

    Howdy Chriss,

Did this get resolved for you? How long did it take?

I'm after finding myself in a similar position while in the process of purchasing a property in Galway city.

    Thanks.

    Hi there OuterBombie
The Probate went thru without causing any delay in the sale. My solicitor was able to check with the probate office that Probate had actually been applied for and when it was applied for and also he was able to get an expected date when it would be granted. It all went thru without a hitch in the expected 7 weeks. It seems if the property is sold this speeds things up. Hope it goes as well for you.
    Good Luck with your purchase
    Chrisss
