    Hi there,
This is more of a query i think!!! :) hopefully someone will know!

I started a new job (software dev) at the start of march. I have to spend this month in belgium on training, but from then on ill be working in ireland.

Now, tomorrow is Paddys days, and im wondering if i should have the day off but its not a public holiday here!

    Any ideas any one?

If I remember correctly it is a bank holiday but not a public holiday (i.e. the company does not have to pay extra/give you time off) but even if I remember that one correctly (was a while since I dealt with that question) the company can offer you an additional day off or pay you for it instead as well.

so that means its up to the company whether i have it off?

If its not a public holiday in belgium then no.

for future reference if anyone comes across this situation and is searching the threads:

hr got back to me and said I work the day and i get a day in lieu.

i was more curious then anything else.

That sounds correct. It is a public holiday, not a bank holiday - so these rules apply:
Employees who qualify will be entitled to either the public holiday off as paid leave or one of the following alternatives:

A paid day off within a month of the public holiday
An additional day of annual leave
    An additional day's pay
The nearest church holiday to the public holiday as a paid day off
