Apparently if you sign up in the Carphonewarehouse on Henry Street you get a free netbook or HDTV. I was wondering if anybody knew anything about this offer. I saw it in the newspaper 2 days ago but havent had a chance to pop into the Henry Street store. Does anybody know the terms and conditions? I am moving house in the next 3 weeks so this could be of interest although I suspect it will only apply if you buy the entire package :(

so someone from upc actually looks at boards! its amazing how he never replies to any of the complaints about there awful service or the fact that they ripped people off in january with the price increases, another reason why upc are rubbish

    Thanks shanemhoban for your comment.

As I am the retail sales manager in UPC, and this is a retail comment, I am authorized to comment on this. I do not represent any other department and am quite upfront in that regard. I am on boards to assist people with the specific boards offer, (which I referred to in my response) and if people have a specific retail comment I am very happy to comment in that regard as that is my area.

We do not currently have an official rep on boards for customer service in the talk to forum, and that is not my role. We do however have a rep on twitter, so if you have a particular issue that you are looking for assistance with, please feel free to contact us there http://twitter.com/weareupc

    Regards

    Jason

Is the HDTV actually compatible with Irish Digital Terrestrial? Analogue ceases in Nov 2012.

    Hi Watty

The TV is compatible with UPC, absolutely nothing to do with DTT.

This is a UPC offer, and UPC offer HDTV, tied to the fact that the analogue switch off does NOT effect UPC customers in any way.

UPC currently provide analoge tv to an amount of our customer base, and we will continue to offer this service after the analogue switch off, as that relates to the transmission of analogue though the air only.

It is for our base who are prepared to pay for their Digital TV, Broadband and phone together from 1 provider to save a considerable amount of money saved.

    Thanks

    Regards

    Jason

My posts for the most part may seem pro UPC while others seem anti UPC.

I think this is best explained by the network itself I am in an upgraded area that offers all 3 services the TV is rock solid the broadband and phone are very stable.

The UPC network is a patchwork which is being upgraded.

Now as regards Sky vs UPC threads here is the simple answer.

Sky has a better TV service which you pay for in a number of hidden ways plus they do not offer broadband or phone.

UPC has a smaller TV service but it is bundled with phone and broadband.

Choice is a good thing if I wanted Sky I would pay for it but it is silly comparing one provider to another.

Find out what you really want do your research and then pick what services you want.

    Simple.:)

    That is absolutely untrue.

People may have other rooms not on UPC, the cable may go down, or they may wish to cancel the UPC TV and have only Cable. Or there may be interactive content Free to air via aerial that UPC will never have.

A TV where the tuner doesn't work via aerial and ONLY works on Cable is a Monitor, not a TV. Analogue Terrestrial is turned off November 2012.

It's irresponsible to supply a TV that doesn't work as TV in Ireland in less than two years time.

In EU it's illegal to "lock" people into Pay TV. Non-Cable TV equipment is legally obliged to be FTA capable. A German PayTV company lost a case on this.

There is little or no difference in price now (LG 42LD450 HDTV is under €500 and works perfectly on Irish Digital, Analogue Cable, and UPC or Sky setbox via HDMI or SCART).

Also UPC will almost certainly at a later date turn off analogue as it wastes a huge amount of cable space that can be re-used for higher quality Digital SD, HD or Modem Download.

If you are supplying a TV you have a duty and Legal obligation that it is compatible with Irish Free To Air Digital or else you must offer it as Monitor, not a TV.

The Government requested in March 2008 that all incompatible TVs be labelled. This may soon actually be enforced. You can escape the requirement by not calling it an HDTV, but an HD video monitor.

    watty

UPC are not supplying this FREE HD TV to our TV customers, our retail partners are. It is not a TV subscription offer, they are giving it away free to our current tv subscribers who sign up to a new Broadband and phone bundle in their stores. www.upc.ie/retailoffer (They are actually giving away a Free Netbook to new TV, Broadband and phone customers)

However, for the free tv, these are current pay tv customers of UPC, (not the recently launched only 6 channel's DTT product), and the TV's supplied are fully legal for sale in Ireland as it stands. Clearly, if you know different, then please publish the facts and I will advise our legal team and the legal teams in Carphone Warehouse, Currys, PC World and DID Electrical, who currently seem very comfortable supplying these tv's to the public.

I won't comment further on this thread, as I am not authorised to comment outside my area publicly. Retail offers are my area, forum debating of Pay TV versus DTT is not, sorry.

    Regards

    Jason

It's not illegal directly if it's not tied to any subscription. If it requires a Subscription to get the offer, it's not "given away", but included.

It's very dodgy and misleading the public. If this HDTV doesn't have basic compatibility (MHEG4, L3 and L4, HE-AAC, MP2, MHEG5 UK profile) I will be publicising the shabby nature of the "offer" to Media, RTE, Websites and Newspapers. As a minimum you need to clearly describe in your offer what it is the offer actually is. "HDTV" no longer is enough as in UK a "Freeview" only "Full HD" TV will never work directly on UK HD Terrestrial. To be a "TV" other than a video monitor for a Set box it must work off an aerial for at least two years.

It's not illegal to sell TVs that don't work here. Never has been. But there are legal issues regarding descriptions.

If in fact it doesn't receive Irish DTT if you add an aerial, you are legally obliged to point this out as in less than two years it will not work as a real TV (November 2012).

Misleading people by omission of information is unethical Advertising.

DTT is NOT designed to compete with UPC or Sky. Saorview is SIMPLY a replacement of the analogue service. Specification was finalised in February 2008, It soft launched in October 2010, Full Launch end May 2011 /start June 2011 and end of Analogue in November 2012.

To supply TVs, no matter what kind of deal, intended only for Sky or UPC pay TV, today that don't work on Irish DTT without telling people clearly this is the case is wrong.

To supply such TVs at all when there is marginal price difference on non-obsolete models that actually work can only be seen as a deliberate attempt to make it harder and more expensive for people to ever cancel Pay TV. That's unethical. Depending how you do it and who takes you to Court it could be found to be illegal. There is EU precedent. (Premiere in Germany).

Please get better qualified and more ethical Legal advice.

I'm not anti-UPC. I know some very senior people in UPC and I think what UPC is doing with their HD upgrades, phone and Broadband rollout is fabulous. Don't spoil a great company with a shabby misleading offer.

I believe Currys /PC world are in serious trouble officially for suggesting "MPEG2 TVs" can be marketed to Sky/UPC customers as "MPEG2 HDTVs". As you know, MPEG2 (Freeview) in the TV is irrelevant as Digital on UPC or Sky always uses the Decoder in the set-box (Which on HD is MPEG4, the MPEG2 is only SD pictures). This import of obsolescent TVs (as they are no use in UK for "Freeview HD") ostensibly for Sky/UPC customers is Product dumping on Irish Market. The NCA has been asked to take action about Currys misleading advertising in this area.

Why are you so pissed about UPC giving it away free stuff to get new customer?
You be working in the tv satellite industry or ercom as you are negative about upc

I got free tv from carphone wareouse, my friends got free computer in currys. Very good. I am very happy.

I have no objection about "special offers".

But any TV should work as a real Digital TV in Ireland, or eles Carphone Warehouse is misleading the Consumer and UPC taking part in a shabby campaign of "lock in".

If you get the Laptop, it's obvious if it's Apple OS X, Linux or Windows, and that it charges on Irish Electricity. Why should people getting the TV get one that actually will only be a video Monitor after October 2012? In France it would be illegal.

At the very least it should be labelled "This will only work as a Monitor on UPC or Sky after October 2012. It's not suitable as a TV."

    1) People should know clearly what is being offered.
    2) It's ethically wrong (and might be illegal) to supply something pretending to be a TV that helps lock people into Pay TV.
    3) You don't need to subscribe to Pay TV to use UPCs excellent Broadband.

    www.saorview.ie

No payTV Company has the right to deprive people of Free TV access via aerial (or Dish).

Yes, Watty is stating true facts. If the tv ihas only got an MPEG2 tuner integrated inside then it is only suitable as a monitor and will be useless for free to air tv via an aerial after the end of 2012 and may encourage someone keep their contract with UPC if it is the only tv which they have instead of forking out for a Saorview set box. It is a promotional hook just like an irresistible mesmerising catchy hooky rock guitar riff or pop song so it will draw in extra customers and revenue for UPC. :) I am of the opinion that both Sky and UPC are more and more becoming worried about losing customers in their droves because of the new decent digital pictures and sounds available from the official launch of Saorview without the need to subscribe to watch RTE and other terrestrial channels etc. All one will have to do is either install a roof or gable end aerial, in some cases an indoor amplified aerial will suffice and also use their existing Sky dish and box or boxes to watch fta UK stations without having to subscribe to either service and thus their monopolies end for the first time and the general public save a wad of cash literally annually.
