I'm unsure if I understand your post correctly.

Your TV is three months old, it's broken and you want to know if you need to receipt for it if you take it back to Lidl?

Yes you need a receipt or I think even a bank statement/credit card statement will suffice. I am not 100% sure on the bank statement/credit card statement though, so perhaps someone more versed can help.

Have you got a link for this information?

I thought for a refund (or repair/replacement) you need SOME proof of purchase, such as a receipt/credit card statement/bank statement not a box.

Personally, I doubt any store would give a refund/replacement without any proof of purchase, and a box (to my knowledge) does not count as proof of purchase.

Your right, it's not proof of purchase and the retailer could refuse it.

However, the electronics brands sticked by Lidl seem to be unique to them. The box would have this brand on it and it could have a bar code that may allow them identify when the product was sold. The serial number on the unit will probably match to the box.

Laura, please dont spread misinformation like that. Without a receipt, they dont HAVE to do anything. Yes the consumer has their rights, but they hinge on proof of purchase which its seems the OP may not have.

If the receipt cannot be found, then it will be down to the company policy on this. They have the right to refuse to do anything. I used to work for LIDL and they tightened their policies on this quite a lot.

Most of what you said here is wrong.

    1. A box for a product is not considered proof of purchase.
    2. If the box and product was unique to a retailer that still doesn't neccessarily mean it proves when it was purchased and if it is under guarantee.
    3. Guarantees themselves are in addition to statutory rights - even outside of guarantee you still have rights. In the case of TVs you would expect the goods to last more than one year and could argue this in a court case if required.
    4. Even with the box and proof of purchase and within the first 12 months of a warranty etc the retailer is under no obligation to refund. They can offer anything of a repair, refund or replacement - the customer can choose to reject the offer and seek redress in the small claims court.

If you ring Lidl free phone number they will advice you the best way to proceed, maybe as they have the items in specific date maybe with make, model and serial they might know how old it it.

Lidl will do nothing without the receipt, I had this issue previously and went through head office to no avail.

superscouse, please dont spread misinformation like that. You don't need a receipt to invoke your consumer rights. You need proof of purchase.
In most cases, this would be a receipt, however other proof is also possible. You could have a unique brand that is only sold in one shop or chain (e.g. Lidl or Aldi), some shops record your name or address when you buy something or they can track your purchase through your credit card.

A unique brand does not prove when the goods were purchased which has it's own implications for the customers claim.

For Lidl and Aldi it mostly does, as most non-Food items are only sold for 2 or 3 weeks as a maximum.

And then repeated every few months over the course of a couple of years ;)

Sorry, but as nearly everyone here has said, no receipt, you are on very shakey ground. I used to work for LIDL. But I wouldnt mind being proved wrong on this.

You still need to prove it was paid for. It has happened in the past that something was stolen and returned for a refund. Hence the need for a proof of purchase. (I am not, for one minute, suggesting the OP is not genuine)

Just call the support number on the box. The shop will not help without proof of purchase, but the support centre will. They go by serial number and you have a long guarantee. I have used them in the past and was very impressed.

Box won't cut it IMHO, I'm not impling the OP did but it's possible the OP could have purchased second hand or even found (if broken) in a skip and be chancing his/her arm for a refund, you need to establish your contract/relationship with Lidl i.e. proof of purchase, then your consumer options become available.
I make ALL my Lidl/Aldi purchases with my Laser card, never cash.

I genuinely wish you the best of luck, but to me, thats a polite pass the buck, but you never know, maybe, just maybe they may sort you out.

But I bet you twenty quid they dont. Genuine offer - twenty quid. (I will want to see the chq)

Last time I returned something to them, I had lost the receipt and was pleasantly surprised that it was not a problem, maybe I was lucky

Did they send you a chq or was it cash?

If a cheque, post it up here and I will stump up the promised 20 quid.

or even a letter - something....

Thats still not proof that YOU bought it or were the original owner.

If I buy a tv, walk outside and give it to you as a present, the shop is not obliged to deal with you at all as there is no contract between you and them.

Generally with proof of address shops dont question that though.

Yeah but lidl are not all other shops. Maybe they understand that replacing faulty goods with a no quibble policy saves them money in the long term.

The OP brings them back the TV and says "its not workin". They can either say:

    OP:"Its not workin"
    Lidl:"Have you got the receipt?"
    OP:"No but..."
Lidl:"Then its our policy to ..
    OP:Yeah but...."
Lidl:"Our policy is very clear about..."
    OP:"No but...."

And so on. Cue numerous phonecalls to lidl that need to be answered, numerous letters that need to be read, possibly solicitors who need to be consulted. Or it can go thus:

    OP:"Its not workin"
Lidl:"Ok, give it back to us. Heres your money back"

Lidl go back to their supplier, and get there money back. The only loser is the supplier who will have factored that into their margins. The OP remains a customer. He comes on here and tells us how great Lidl are.

Lidl either loses little to no money and gets free good advertising, and keep a customer. Or they can potentially lose money, get bad advertising and lose a customer. Its nice to see a company pick the equi-beneficial option for a change.
