Smartphones to be released soon?

Ive been deliberating over what new phone to get. Currently Im undecided between Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire HD or Iphone.

But now I hear rumours of the release of a Galaxy S 2?

So my question is, is there any phones coming out in the immediate future that would be worth waiting for? Or is it a better idea to get a phone that has been established in the market and has had all the initial bugs sorted out?

Im looking for a smartphone for usual use. Internet, music, best battery life possible.

    Any advice appreciated

Wait until April/May. Any iPhone 5 competitors will have been released by then.

Are there any phones with a QWERTY keyboard worth waiting for?

Had a mess around with the HTC Incredible S today. Looks and feels lovely, especially when compared with the bulkier Desire HD beside it. Was running 2.2.1.
Comparing the specs in the shop though it looked like the DHD had a better standby and talk time than it though.

Sony Ericsson Arc and Play are due in May

I'm having a similar dilema, I'm leaning towards the HTC Ace Desire HD as it's got an 8mp camera over the Samsung 5mp one.
I'm a little eager but I guess I could wait a month or two. Won't it always be a case of waiting a few more months for the newest technology though?
What kind of improvements or new features can we expect does anyone know?
Battery life improvements would be the only thing I'd wait for tbh.

Dual Core HTC Pyramid on the way - might be June July timeframe - looks like it will be the bees knees !

I suspect Android 3.0 is a mistake and it may be 2.3 that will be running on it

Guys sorry to ask this question here cos i'm sure it's been done to death but what's the big deal with the iphone? The spec doesn't look as good as some of the androids and it's much pricier cos it's Apple I guess but why do people rave about it? Only started researching smartphones today so trying to figure it all out before getting one.

Ok so I'm not missing anything then. Just want to do my research before signing one of these new longer contracts.

You might be missing something, some people prefer the iPhone. See if you have an extended try out with both before deciding.

in the iphone's defence, they're all very solidly made and the UI fluid. i just find myself describing it as a smartphone for dummies - which is not necessarily a bad thing

androids UI is just as fluid and the simple addition of widgets makes it the better choice imo. i could write a really long response about android's advantages but it's been done to death

as for new smartphones coming, keep an eye on gsmarena, i can't offer much help there as i'll be holding on to my trusty desire for the foreseeable future so i've not been keeping a keen eye on new events

iOS (the OS iPhone uses) has a better user experience, superior battery life and better back-up from the manufacturer. All updates are instant, all apps work regardless of phone model (Some do take advantage of specific hardware features, like a gyroscope or 'retina' graphics, only on the 4, for example).

Sure you trade widgets, but the home screen of the iPhone will tell you the date and time, it's not as pretty as some Android overlays but equally functional, just in a different way.

My preference is defiantly for iPhone, that said, I wouldn't say it was necessarily "better" than Android.

    Iphones are ridiculously overpriced though

How so? Better than what? Symbian perhaps but not Android.
    superior battery life
How does iOS offer superior battery management?
and better back-up from the manufacturer.
http://code.google.com/android/ - Android is constantly being updated. Possibly even more frequently than iOS.
    All updates are instant
If by instant you mean connecting your phone to iTunes then yes they are instant. Instant on Android generally means OTA updates.
all apps work regardless of phone model (Some do take advantage of specific hardware features, like a gyroscope or 'retina' graphics, only on the 4, for example).
Designing for 4 or so different models with almost negligible hardware differences (In hardware architecture that is) is far easier than designing apps for a few hundred different phones that run different hardware using different architecture. Even so, the majority of apps work fine on the majority of popular Android devices. You'll only have compatibility issues if you use Chinese-made tablets and the like.
Sure you trade widgets, but the home screen of the iPhone will tell you the date and time,
All seven homescreens on Android can show the date and time... It's not exactly a groundbreaking feature.

Sorry for the long post but I just really prefer Android over iOS.

Maybe it's worth waiting for the the Optimus 2x or the Optimus Black, not sure if they will come to Ireland though, haven't heard any word from operators on it.

    .

The camera on the Desire HD is fairly lacking. I have one.

Wish you hadn't told me the camera is lacking. Getting a bit sick of researching.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,992 ✭✭✭✭partyatmygaff

It's lacking in low-light conditions only.

In well lit conditions the camera is very good.
