Can you ever just be friends?

I'm gay (female) and my best friend's straight. We are extremely close and would probably say that we are the closest that we've ever been with anyone else, ever. It's intense like that. Anyway, I'm pretty much in love with her (cliche, I know) but what I want to know is, when 2 people are that close, understand each other and care for each other THAT much, is this not expected?

Can't say I can agree whatsoever. My straight friends are just that to me.

seems to happen with friends of the opposite sex too. its the whole 'ross and rachel' thing - it took ross 9 or 10 years of friendship and fancying her to tell her he fancies he, never mind loved her. it happens. and it seems you can be friends but it really depends on how the whole thing plays out.
maybe you told her and she felt the same or maybe she'd be so mortified the friendship would fizzle out or maybe she'd understand and you can work past it.
or if you didnt tell her you have to ask yourself how you'd handle it when she starts going out with someone else. she'd have less time too. so for your sake its a good question to ask yourself - maybe all it'd take is to step back a little.

Id have to agree with Dr. Baltar, I (and many others im sure) spent years in love/lust with my best mate. But hes straight simple as. I did tell him at one point and things got a little difficult but we got passed it. Ended up good mates but not as close as we once were.

I dont think any good can come of telling her. Mates are mates and should stay in that place... doesnt stop you thinking but imo you're setting yourself up for a fall.
