its not an end of life write off but a category c. i had just renewed it for the whole year about 3 weeks ago!! 640 euro:(. i didn't even want to get rid of the car but they reckon the repairs were not worth it so the dismantler took it away today. is there a way of transferring the tax to the new car even? anyone know about this?

    rant
i think its unfair that i should be punished (for want of a better word) cos i chose to renew it for 12 months because they do encourage it. won't be doing it again though.

You can get a full refund if your vehicle has been scrapped and there are at least 3 months remaining on the tax disc. You did remember to take the tax disc off the car before you let it go? :)

No. The road-tax is attached to that particular vehicle. A Cat-C can go back on the road so the tax can't be reclaimed. Check the exact terms of your insurance policy. Some insurers do include a road-tax refund as part of their policy in the event of a write-off. I think my current one does.

His car hasn't been scrapped. It's just a Cat C. Only Cat A and Cat B write-offs qualify for a refund.

Yes you can, you need to go the motor tax web site and download an application for a refund of motor tax RF 120http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/PublicationsDocuments/FileDownLoad,17194,en.pdf

I think your best bet is to give them a call , are you going to transfer the remainder onto another car? If so i can't see why that would be a problem!!!

I've been here before, but with FBD. You can't reclaim the tax, as the car isn't being scrapped and, in any case, it's no longer yours. What you can do is have them factor the tax into the write-off value of the car.

it has to be certified not returning to use to get a refund, if it is bought as a crashed repairable then you are out of luck, you will need an end of life cert from the dismantler to get you dosh back.
