2 year old car, warranty just out, turbo repair

    Hi,

    I have a two-year old 2.0 diesel car.
    The turbo has failed and it is just out of warranty.
    I left it with with the garage and it was due a service which was done simultaneously.
    The manufacturer has honoured the part but the dealer is charging €270 for labour.
    These repair labour charges are, as far as I can tell, aside from service labour charges (service bill incl. labour was €260); both were done on the same morning.

    I don't know if I'm doing well to have the part covered outside of warranty at all or if the dealer should do better to honour the labour in these circumstances. I know it is out of warranty but I'd like to know what other people think and what your experiences are.
    There was an obvious expectation when I purchased this particular car two years ago that it would be more durable than this. :(

    Depends really ..

    Did you get it serviced at the correct intervals at the dealer ?

    If you got it serviced at the dealers then you could try and contact Head office of the Company that made the car.

    If you got it serviced at an Indy then they have no way to validate if the service took place or if it was done properly at the correct intervals.

    Turbos can fail prematurely due to Oil Starvation or not servicing the car at the correct time.

    Serviced at the dealer it was bought at (at good expense every time)...I took good care of it and there were no problems with oil that I know of....

    Do you know if a car is covered under warranty, does the dealer honour the labour or does the manufacturer pay them?

    I suppose I want to known if, in this situation, the decision not the cover the labour was made by the manufacturer or the dealer?

    Sorry, I didn't know if it was appropriate as I've found the brand and dealer to be very good in general.
    It's a 2.0 TDI 140bhp Scirocco with 18 235s
    I should say that I've had no other problems with this car.
    It's fantastic in every respect and this problem aside, I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

    I would have thought that the labour on a turbo replacement would be more than 270. Maybe the dealer is already covering some of the labour.

    Yeah, you were right. There was a bit of a dealer discount there which was decent. And I have to give them credit for getting the part out of warranty.

    Satisfied with the outcome but it shouldn't happen to a two-year old car.

    Certainly shouldnt but pretty well handled by manufacturer and dealer. Good outcome really. The 2 year warranty is crazy though.

    Do you let it simmer after a run before you turn off the engine? If not, you should start getting into the habit. Could be the difference between your new turbo lasting you 2 years vs. 10 years.

    Turbo failure is a pretty big problem for a two year old car. I love VAG cars of old (Original 'rocco, mk2 Golfs) but lately they are terrible in the reliability stakes.

    Good job on having it sorted by them though

    Sounds like you got 100% parts and 50% labour which is not too bad.

    I agree that the turbo shouldn't have failed so soon but at least the manufacturer stepped up to some extent. The warranty was up so goodwill was extended.

    In fairness it is very very unusual for the turbo on that engine to go after 2 years.
