Insurance change for new car

    Hi all,

Just a general question. I've just bought an S2000 and am picking it up this weekend. Now I know I can get insurance etc when renewal comes so thats not an issue.

My current insurer is nononsense and normally they won't quote online for this car. I know they are legally obliged to quote/cover me for the remainder of my term with them. As this is a reasonably high performance car, I have a feeling they may attempt insertion of a lubricated rod in the hopes that I will switch to someone else....

Just wondering if anyone else has been in this position? What would be an "acceptable" price to pay? Anybody had any good/bad experiences? Particularly with nononsense? (For reference, I'm trading up from a 140bhp celica to a 240bhp S2000.)

    Thanks all...

    Z.

    What have they quoted you?

Are they? I know it's common practise, but this is the first i've heard of any legal obligation.

Yes they are legally obliged to cover you for the remainder of your contract, once you hadn't planned to change cars when you originally bought the insurance (or something like that, it's a bit wishy washy). If they kick up just threaten them with the ombudsman, they'll quote you then. You may as well bend over now though, cos you know it's coming....

I ended up paying more than 200 quid extra for 6 weeks insurance, on top of the 7 or 800 I was already paying. If you extrapolate for a whole year that's over 2,500:confused: That was only for a golf GTI btw, with Quinn.

My policy only went up €200 when I changed from an Alfa 156 to an Elise, although both are 1.8 with roughly the same power (different machines altogether though obviously). That's with Axa.

Have you a link to written confirmation of this?

@ OP - You should always have binding insurance quotes arranged before buying a new car. What are you going to do if FBD refuse to quote at the weekend? Or quote silly money for TP only and no-one else will cover you? 'Acceptable' is a function of your other options; if €8k pa TP is the best quote available and you've paid for the S2000 then you either pay it or resell the car.

Hmmm... I must phone them later and get an actual quote, just wanted to get a few idea's first...

I've been screwed by Quinn before. The first time I took insurance out was with them and it cost me €2,450... :(

All new quotes I've gotten on the S2k so far have come to about €1600-€1700 for the year which actually isn't too bad... the Celica is coming in about €1200-€1300 so not a major difference given the huge increase in power... (have to admit., I'd pay twice that to get my hands on this car... fantastic drive.... :) )

Are there any insurers known to be good for young people? I turned 26 last week and only have 3 years no claims as was always just a named driver for certain periods before that. Never a full year in one go so doesn't count for me. I know xsdirect are there but they insurance policies are terrible when you read the fine print...

I'm afraid I don't but that's what I was told by an insurance broker (who was nothing to do with Quinn) when I was ringing around, he told me to get back on to Quinn and demand a quote, maybe he didn't say it was law exactly but he said they were obliged to provide a quote for the remaining period of my cover. I was on the phone to quinn for about 15 mins and as soon as I mentioned the insurance ombudsman I was put on hold and he came back with a quote straight away so there must be something to it.

Well I have the exact same age/NCB and chill.ie were about 500 quid cheaper than everyone else, you need to request a call back or ring them though to get the best deal. Worth a try maybe? They have a forum on here as far as I know.
Policy was with setanta in the end (through chill) but I think you have to go through a broker to get them.

If you're really struggling to get even a half decent quote xsdirect are there but as you say the 4,500 euro excess or whatever it is makes it more of a last resort. Apart from that I hear they're grand though...:pac:

Best of luck with it anyway, and congrats on the car...

If your looking for a long list of insurers try my thread in the modified car section and get ringing.

They will cover you till the end of the policy then you may have an issue.
