Cabochons, anyone?

Hi - I'm interested in using glass beads and cabochons in my crafts projects, and was wondering if there were any shops here in Ireland (preferably in the Mayo/Sligo/Donegal/Leitrim area) that might stock cabochons, specifically. I'm looking for flat-bottomed beads and flat-bottomed cabochons, specifically, as I need them to adhere to a flat surface (wood, paper, slate, metal and glass surfaces), so they can't be rounded all over. I've purchased them in the past on an on-line/ebay shop, but as I'd like to buy a fairly large quantity of them this time, the postage (the shop's in the UK, and the postage is bound to go through the roof if I order more than just a few), I'd rather just be able to go into an actual shop and select them and then buy them right there and then.

Any info or addresses/phone numbers/websites would be great.

The Galway Bead Shop have an excellent selection of beads and as far as I recall cabochons as well.

Thanks, Das Kitty. I've not been down to Galway in a long while, and wasn't sure if that bead shop was still there. Glad I'm wrong about that. I'm heading out there next month to see some friends anyway, so that will be the perfect side trip on my cabochon treasure quest. Thanks for their website/link, as well.

Hi again - Now that I've clicked on the link you'd given me (thanks again for that) I realised that the shop I'd been thinking of was on Shop Street. As I'm not all that familiar with Galway other than the main shopping area/Eyre Square, is the bead shop you mentioned near from the main shopping area?

Yep. It's the same one you're thinking of ( there's only ever been one). You just follow shop street down towards the Spanish arch and take a left onto cross street at the top of quay street. If you look at street view it should be clear. :)

Thanks for your help once again, Das Kitty. You can definitely tell that it's been a long while - too long a while - since I was last in Galway. I remember going into that bead shop and it was like a sweet shop - all those glorious colours and shapes. At that time, I was into jewellery making (I still love jewellery, but not in the crafting sense any longer, as I started getting both eye strain and finger/hand/wrist cramping) and really loved going in there - even if only to browse or to make mental notes about what I wanted to buy next time I got to Galway.

Now that I'm into painting/crafting, using beads and cabs are more a decorative embellishment/addition, rather than the main emphasis of the pieces themselves. I wish I had some cabs left over from there...but then again, not having any left over means that I must, must, must get over there soon and get some more.;)

Thanks again for your help, and for the directions there. Cabs, glorious cabs await!

Hi Steve - Yes, I'm always looking for crafty things like beads, cabochons and the like. Do you have a website I can check out? Thanks.

    Hi filmifan

We do not condone selling onsite here on boards.ie, or touting for business. Please respect the charter.

    Thank you

Sorry about that, Cork Girl. I honestly and sincerely didn't realise that I was doing anything wrong. I'm just looking for advice on where I can get craft items (i.e., cabochons) and just came to boards.ie looking for some advice on where I might find them.

I really thought that, in replying to the recent post (from Steve Lee), that I wasn't doing anything wrong by asking where I could find some cabochons. Similar to my initial post, asking about where I could find (in actuality, buy) them, and some kind people have responded.

I can assure you that I am not here touting or selling anything, but if I upset the rules, my apologies for that.

Can I ask you this, though: how should I have worded my reply to Steve, when he asked me if I was still looking for cabochons or glass beads? I'm not being smarmy or smart-arsed by asking that...I just honestly and genuinely did not realise that it came across as doing something wrong.

Apologies - it wasn't you that was breaking the rules - it was Steve Lee who has been banned. I understand where you are coming from, but in general we do not allow selling and touting for business on this forum. If this happens - we expect users to notify the moderators and not engage with the poster.

Wish you the best of luck in finding what you are looking for :)

Thanks, Cork Girl. I'm glad I'm not 'in trouble,' then.:D

As for that fella being banned, had I realised that he was breaking the rules, I'd have not replied to him on the board.

Thanks for being understanding. I promise I'll be good from now on.:o

Have you ever tried Sligo for beads etc? there is a fairly new shop called Twinkles on Union Street. It's open Wed to Sat from about 11am to 4.30pm. Has lots of beads but I'm not sure what sort. Might be worth a look if you in that area.

Thanks, KatyMac. I've heard of Twinkles from someone in an art shop in Sligo town a while back, but I've never actually been in there. Next time I'm in the area, I'll definitely check it out, though. Thanks for letting me know.

I don't know of any local shops, but AGrainOfSand.com is a great online resource for cabochons and cheap beads.

I don't know if this shop has moved, but I was in the TKMaxx shopping centre in Sligo on Monday & saw a bead shop named Twinkles in the mezzanine level of the centre. It was open when I was there at lunchtime on Monday.
