Power shower occasionally making a funny noise

I have a Triton T90i and 2 or 3 times over the past couple of weeks when I turn it on it's made a very loud noise, similar to the regular noise it makes but much louder and a bit higher pitched. It stops immediately when I turn it off and doesn't happen again when I turn the shower back on. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and, most importantly, whether it means the shower is unsafe in any way.

Possibly brushes in the motor or lack of supply water to the pump.

Its actually called a pumped electric shower. Important to distinguish when speaking to an engineer.

Anyway as above its either the brushes or the heating element, I would bet the brushes.

Thanks guys, appreciate that. As someone completely useless at this sort of thing I'm afraid I've a few more questions.

    - Most importantly, is the shower safe?
    - Can showers be fixed or do I need a new one?
    - Do I need a plumber or an electrician?
    - Assuming it's the brushes, how much would it cost to fix or would it be cheaper to buy a new one?

The T90i is now obselete but some parts are still available, if you can get brushes then they'll cost no more than a tenner and a sparks or appliance service man will fit them, if it ends up with a replacement T90xr then you need a good plumber.
