My partner follows usgs http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/ and #earthquake on twitter religiously, as she is a science nerd.

She told me something big was going to happen in that area after a number of "six pointers" in the area, the preceding Thursday.

It is just science, no magic 8 balls involved people.

There was plenty of foreshocks that occurred, the biggest which was around 7.2. That could've led to predictions of a larger event occurring especially since there hadn't been an Earthquake of that size in Japan for a long time.

There's probably some nutter somewhere forecasting disaster for various locations for every single day of the year. Therefore if one trawls through the thousands of nutjob doom predictions retrospectively following a major disaster there's a good chance that by pure coincidence some nutter somewhere had predicted it.

This is bull****. On any given day there is some nutjob or other predicting doom. The law of averages dictates some of them will occasionally be right simply due to chance
