Those Lost Sheep!!

We have had some sheep grazing away on our land for the last fortnight or so eating all the grass and cannot be kept out. None of the neighbours seem to own them and no one else seems to be 2 worried about them either. However someone has been feeding them meal in the feild. None of them have tags either.
Do many other people have these problems and how do you solve them?
And are all sheep not meant to be electronically tagged?

Thats unbelievable - that someone has been feeding them while they're in your land... Is there many of them?

Would agree with the last poster - put em in the shed and see what happens. Someone will come looking, so you'd see who they are, and what their game is...

Let us know how you go.

Aye, put em in a shed for a few days, if the owner comes lookin tell him you're keeping one for rent.

if they dont come lookin call the department.

And keep one for rent :)

Bring in the sheep. Read the tag numbers. Contact the gardai and the dept with details of tags and numbers and how long they are present. And lock the shed they are in until you get paid for the grazing. I believe it is around 1 euro/head/day. The dept will probably inspect his farm to determine why the stock strayed and why the delay in collecting them. Best of luck:)

we had 5 sheep and 9 lambs for ages , took tags , rang department and rang guards , they where supposed to belong to a guy from the north , when we rang him , he hadnt had sheep for years... dept guy said to put them in freezer , so we put the lambs in freezer and my cousin took the ewes

What can the department do if they have no tags?

Its not so much the fact they will eat most the grass its more the fact that no one has come 2 look about them and they have been feeding them in the field.
Coincidentally a neighbours cattle ended up in our field this morning only 4 of them and he was up there 2day to let us know they were his and he is taking them out this evening. Thats what this sheep farmer should have done if at all geniune.

Are you up in Sligo, A friend of mine had the same problem. A guy dropped of the sheep in to forestry land and they strayed into his large back yard and proceded to strip graze every thing. They asked nicely to have the removed, he didn't do it so they rang the department.

Apparently the guy with the sheep operates in an 20 mile radius of his small farm, dropping of sheep in land that isn't that well protected....Department fairly sorted out your man as he had been at it before.

Could you shoot a few of them and say they were worrying your dog!!!:)

contact the guards and tell them you want sheep removed or you'll take ownership of them in whatever time frame you like.. doubt if the guards will be bothered removing ewes so then tagged them and send them to factory (good cull prices at the moment) ...now if your man comes back tell him to go to the guards.. nobody minds genuine straying animals the odd time but using your ground for free and feeding them in your field... don't think so.. make sure you tell guards there no tags so you r man can't be identified.. all sheep have to be tagged by law..so he is playing clever there. you can always put them in freezer as suggested..tasty treat...good luck..

you could move them on to my land if you like:rolleyes:

I'd understand sheep breaking out but some god damn cheek to be feeding them meal on your land

Go to the gardai and tell them. They won't care at all but at least you'll be on record that you did
Then turn them inside for a week
If noone comes knocking then take ownership

    Put them in the freezer
Or you can drop them over to my land if you want :)

Interesting that about calling the guards and then taking ownership of them few free sheep wouldnt go a miss! However if the owner did eventually come lookin for them he could hold an awful grudge against ye for it then end up stealing cattle or somethin else plenty of boys at it.
Going to put them in shed tomorrow to see what happens!!
Thanks for all the offers to take them off our hands!!

keep them in and u will find out who owns them for sure . when inside u are obliged to feed and water them. make him pay big time then .the sheep are not the problem it is the owner.

Gone at last.. Let them out of the shed yesterday (I wasnt going to be bothered looking after them enough work to do) so back out to our field and today they are gone!! I dont know where they went to and havent seen them in any other fields nearby. Just glad they are gone!! Someone must have missed them.

Good to hear tis over, and you're happy.

Was there any tyre tracks or anything around the gate this morning? Fair play that you're happy about it, and yer probably right. Personally, I would be a bit anoyed that they're gone now and no satisfaction got - no idea who it was, etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭Nutcase

No tyre tracks and no sign of anyone taking them away up the next day and noticed they were gone. Yeah it would have been interesting to know who might have owned them but really just glad they are gone. It was annoying to get up everyday and put them out of the field and then have them back in that evening again waste of time. Just happy dont have to worry about them anymore. Thanks for everyones comments and advice!
