Broken Crown

I had an implant and crown done last year and today a piece of the crown broke off while I was eating lunch. I've got an appointment to see my dentist tomorrow but I'm wondering what I should expect regarding the cost of replacement.

Is it possible to repair or should it be replaced? It's a front tooth so it's important for me that it looks perfect. I spent years with a bad front tooth before I got thus done and I don't want to go back to being self conscious about my smile.

Obviously I don't want to have to pay for another crown as I spent a total of €2.7k last year for an implant and crown. More to the point I have to have this done again to my other front tooth later this year so I can't afford to pay for another crown. I saved for a long time to have the work done last year.

Can the dentists on thus forum let me know what's the standard practice in
terms of cost of repair or replacement?

Despite what you may think (which is fair enough BTW) 2.7k for an implant and a crown was pretty cheap and I know from you previous posts the dentist was very particular about things so I would not worry too much.

Personally it depends on why it broke....if you fell then its your fault. If your a grinder and refused or will not wear a splint then its your fault. Most dentist are fair and take pride in their work. Usually they will either replace it for free or if its been some time or it your fault then you pay lab bills only or some other compromise. The reason it broke must be addressed or it will happen again.

BTW its rarely what you were doing at the time the piece came off that did it, its usually something thats been going on a while and then finally a bit gives up.

They can be repaired but its usually not very long term.

Thanks fitzgeme. The cost of the overall work is of course irrelevant and I certainly don't want to engage in Irish dental cost bashing.

I can't think if any reason why it broke. It was also a clean break. I didn't fall or have a knock. I don't currently drink alcohol so there were no drunken nights out which I can't remember.

Of course I just want it fixed asap but I'm a bit freaked about who carries the cost. I almost burst in tears this afternoon when I retrieved the broken piece. My dentist is reputable and conscientious so I'll just wait until I see him tomorrow.

And anyone who does on thsi thread will be banned and their post deleted. But I have a feeling that when you visit your dentist tomorrow you will find out why you should pay for the reassurance of having some comeback and a dentist that is trying to make their patients happy rather than just make money. It will be grand.

Just to give an update; I went to see my dentist who was quite suprised as he said he's never had this happen before. He was adamant that it would be fixed. The first step is to repair it and I asked if repairing it would ensure it would be as flawless and strong as before and he said if it isn't it will be replaced without hesitation.

So I'm feeling alot more reassured and will have it fixed on Monday.
