Is this a common problem and is it anything to be worried about?

Friend of mine has the same thing. I had it on a Leon. It's the bearings giving up in the box, happens a few of them.

It's not a very cheap fix, if the cars a good one worth keeping I'd consider fixing it but if not drive it until it goes. Can last a while like that. My friends is like that 2 years. How bad is the whine? Noticeably loud?

my last 1.0 had a whine in the box at 89k, i sold it 2 years later with a whine in the box at around 130k.

i wouldn't lose any sleep. even if it does give up, a second hand/ recon box wont cost much.

are you sure its the gearbox?

I barely notice it most of the time, it's very feint. Google tells me that it is a relatively common problem with these transmissions and they still keep going.

Any Toyotaphiles know anything for certain?

Main dealer told my friend to drive it on and forget about it:D

Pretty sure. I have read a few used buyer guides which highlight transmssion whine as a problem, basically saying they all do it at some stage and that it's nothing really to be worried about.

It's just I know there are a few lads on here who are knowledgable on Toyotas and thought it would be worth asking just to be sure.

well thats the long and the short of it really.

depending on age/ mileage has the gearbox oil ever been changed?

i changed the box oil in my yaris recently, only cost 20 euro and half an hour, definitely something an amateur could take on, and would prolong its life.

its supposed to be changed every 80,000 miles.

If it's very faint there is more than likely a good lash of miles left in it, it may well last years and years. Do keep an ear to it though as it can progress quickly sometimes to a more audible whine which can turn into a little rumble. It's not economically viable to sort unless you either

    - fit a good replacement yourself
    - replace the bearings in this one yourself

both are ballaches and not really feasible for most DIY lads that do the odd oil change and pads etc, when the gearbox went in the 216 I had I was thinking of throwing in a replacement as I had plenty of time once I got the ZT but I just wasn't overly keen on trying it.

Well this yoke only has 47k miles on it, with a brand new engine having been fitted about 10k ago.

Yeah, I probably won't be holding onto it for much longer anyway. I already have plans for another car.

That said, it's suiting me perfectly right now as a car being a college student. It's just the transmission that I'm a bit apprehensive about.

Sorry for going off topic but.... Mature student? I'd have you pegged at about 40 years old

Wife's 2001 yaris has had a gearbox whine for the past 3 years. It started at about 60k and there is now 80k on it.
I wasn't too worried when i first noticed it because i had read all about it on various forums.
By the way OP, when you say "new engine" fitted 10k ago was that a brand new engine and gearbox or a 2nd hand one ?

Brand new engine fitted due to oil stravation. It's still on its original gearbox though I'd say.

The thing is, I'd say the oil in my gearbox is good for another few miles. It has only done slightly less than 50k after all.

If you have a whine on a manual it's not good bit change the oil might prolong any trouble. If you are keeping it I'd drive on...gently. Scrap boxes are relatively cheap, not wallet friendly but not too bad.
