Career change in IT..

    Hi all,

I'm considering a career change, from IT Networks admin into Software Dev. Now, you may ask why exactly... Well, I've been working as a network/windows based admin for 3 yrs now in a public sector organisation, and it's getting incredibly boring. Also, if one is to beleieve the rumours floating around, redundancies are on the way in June...

I am looking to go back to college in Sept (have the CAO filled etc), and the only reason I am saying I would like to do Software Dev is because I think I would have a good aptitude for it (A2 Hons LC Maths, very good head for numbers, problem solving etc.)

Would anyone be able to suggest a self-taught introduction book/package that I would be able to give a go for a month or two to see if this is really for me?? Also, has anyone any opinions about getting into SoftDev at this point in time?

    TIA,
    Joe.
