Sudden problem connecting to SQL Server 2005

I get a generic error when I try to connect via ASP.NET application or through SQL Server Management Studio. Database is on local machine.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

[will not let me deselect bold in this text editor].

I'm not sure what has caused this. Restarting the machine does not fix it. OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Been working fine on this machine for ages, and the db was not changed manually in any way between it working and not working.

Any suggestions about how to fix this or what might be wrong?

    Edit:

nvm the sql server service was stopped for some reason. Started and works fine still. Brain fart.
