    Norris launches presidential campaign

    14/03/2011 - 12:24:42
The race for the Arás is underway with David Norris officially kicking off his presidential campaign today.

The Senator is hoping to secure a nomination to run in the election, which is expected to take place in October.

Before getting his name on the ballot paper though, he must secure the support of 20 Oireachtas members or four county councils.

The 19 Independent deputies elected to the 31st Dail could help his cause and he said he is already canvassing them for support.

Presidential elections are normally fairly benign and quiet in Ireland. I reckon this time may be different. Do you reckon Ireland is ready and will vote in an openly gay President? From my point of view the issue does not arise at all. I think David Norris would make a very good President. He is sharp, articulate, affable, with a fine sense of humour and he has achieved alot. Obviously we don't know yet exactly who else will be running but how do you see this campaign playing out? Do you think much will be made of the whole gay issue? And what groups will lead the charge on that front....will it be "the usual suspects"?

Hopefully the best person for the job will be elected irrespective of sexuality, race or gender. The criteria is merit as far as I see it.

I was hoping it was going to be about Matt Damon's latest role myself.

I think Senator Norris is well qualified to enter the Aras.

David Norris would be wasted in the role of President, pity he didn't run for the Dail, where he may actually make an impact. He does actually have a good deal of sensible suggestions about many topics.

As president how would he achieve any of that, its just a useless symbolic role that cannot accomplish any real change in legislation or society unless government have already approve it.

Well. I have as much interest in what he does with his genitals as I did in what either of the Marys did with theirs. He has my vote.

More irrelevance, but I thought the presidency was a woman's only position?

If Norris wants to be up in the Aras it wouldn't surprise me.

Hopefully he will get the nomination, can be difficult run without party support. His comments about Cathal O'Searcaigh a number of years ago may come back to haunt him.

Personally, I think he'd go mad with having to keep quiet....he's not the keep quiet type, really.

Now THAT would be a pain in the Aras for him if so!

P.S. I'm jesting - I'd vote for him too, to be honest! :D

    Same here.

I probably would have anyway as I think he has proven himself in the senate (one of the few to do so there.) But the option of p!ssing off a few religious nutjobs in the process makes him the clear number 1 candidate IMO!

So may his comments on paedophilia:

"The law in this sphere should take in to account consent rather than age"

Or his comments on incest - He publicly stated there might be grounds for a ban in the case of girls in order to avoid genetically undesirable pregnancies.

His remarks are well publicised and easily found. If this is the man you want for your president go ahead and vote for him. I wouldn't vote for him in a million years.

I really find it hard to get interested in the race for the Presidency. As long as d!ckheads like Bertie et al don't run, I don't care.

I wont vote for him, why would i?

Didn’t he label the leaders of the 1916 rising as terrorists? Is he who we want standing outside the GPO presiding over the 100 year anniversary of one of the biggest events which took place in our history?

Doesn’t he also suggest we should rejoin the commonwealth?

I'd love to see him as President, it will be hard for him to get the nomination though. If Michael D. didn't have such a good chance, he could probably have gotten some Labour support.

He's an entertaining, quick witted and intelligent man, plus it could show the world that we are actually progressive and we can have an openly gay president.

    Sure who will nominate him?
Will he be like Dana and not even make it onto the ballot?
FG and Labour dominate most councils so he won't get their vote.

    Guessing
    FF: Brian Crowley
FG: Mairéad McGuinness MEP or Séan Kelly
    Labour: Michael D

    These are all strong candidates

he's a detestable human being regardless of his sexuality. his comments on pedophelia and incest in an interview with magill are indefensible and should automatically
Exclude him as a genuine candidate. He has made many other extremely bizarre comments about the same subjects in public over the last 15 years.

If he becomes president of this country, the majority of the population are officially retarded. The only reason he would get elected is because he is gay, and voting for someone because of their sexuality is just are retarded as voting for someone based on race, religion or post code.

Michael D. Higgins will get my vote.
An actual intelligent, witty, experienced gentleman.

Not some jumped up little pseudo-intellectual westbrit with leanings towards NAMBLA.

Yeah, there was nothing but milking cows on Ear to the Ground

If that makes her a celebitician what's impressive about Norris doing late night shows on Newstalk with light chat and playing favourite songs.

No he didn't say that about 1916, he said that in today's context they would be labelled as such in the media. Link for commonwealth comments please. Anyhow, rejoining the cw will never be on the cards so don't worry.

On the GPO - he plans to convert it into a theatre (and actually put it to good use), so who better a man than DN to be there in 1916!
