A question prompted by the Vincent Brown show "We cant talk about politics tonight so ... ummmm" which was aired on the night before the election. It was about the Irish tendency to to defer to various social group at various times in our history from royalty back in the day, clergy, politicians and more recently to celebrities.
So with this in mind and with the imminent visits of Queeny Uk, Pope Ben and Obama, Im curious.
Is there anyone you defer to as opposed to just showing them the usual good manners due to everyone?
    And why?

As in 'humble submission and respect' as in the way the British public are to treat their Queen.
Who would you bow to and feel a little inferior to?
I suppose what i mean is that as a republic we are all supposed to be equals but is there an Irish person or group you would be a little submissive toward?

I know of people who get all jittery in the presence of priests and politicians.

I think I'd blindly accept almost anything out of Stephen Fry's mouth as truth. Same but to a slightly lesser extent for Penn jillette.

I have no respect for those who do it or expect people to do it for them

Where I grew up in a very rural area in Mayo I had real mixed messages. My Dad was typical of the era and area and was overtly respectful of clergy and politicians. He then made the mistake of moving back into the area with his heathen British Protestant wife who called the parish priest by his first name at his request (he has since left the priesthood) but the entire community thught she should be burnt at the stake. She also took former minister Padraig Flynn to task at a public meeting and told him that she pays his wages and he works for her and not the other way around.:D
I think this is on its way out but I still see it from time to time.
