    hi everyone

i tried turning on my laptop and it is totally dead. i have checked the charger and it is working perfectly. the battery is working also. none of the laptop lights come on including the charger LED when the charger is plugged into the laptop. i am not sure what i should try. it is a toshiba laptop and the warranty is up on it by about 6 weeks.

the only thing i can think of is that the motherboard has been fried but if anyone has any idea's i would be very grateful.

    regards

    Colm

Without any more information, i would contact them while it is still under warranty.

There are many tests that you can do, but if you are not even getting power into the "lights"...
Have you tried plugging it in WITHOUT the battery?

EDIT: - if so, and it does power up, then try updating the BIOS from the Toshiba website..

    thanks for the reply.

unfortunately the laptop is out of warranty by about 6 weeks (typical). i have tried it with just the battery and then took out the battery and tried it with just the power cord. i have tested the power cord with a multimeter and it is working perfectly. have not tested the battery but the laptop should still work if the power cord is good with the battery in or not. i have taken out the battery and power cord and pressed the start button for 30 seconds then plugged in the power cord and battery but still not luck. i wouldn't mind if something happened but nothing bad happened to the laptop. it was working perfectly one minute and then no signs of life the next.

if you have any other idea's i would be very grateful

    regards

Got some info here on doing a power reset.
    Have you attempted to reset it;

unplug the unit, remove the battery, hold down the power button for 1 - 2 min. replace batter and plug and attempt to restart.

yes i have tried this option but only for 30 seconds or so. maybe if i give it a bit longer it might work but i don't hold too much hope.

thanks for the reply. any suggestions are much appreciated.

Another thing to check is the memory. Check each memory module individually in Bank0 and then powering up the machine. Possible that one of the modules could be dead.

Bring it back to where you bought it. Warranty doesnt mean anything, its just something extra that they give you. It does not affect your rights. Did you buy it one or years ago? Either way bring it back, at first they may try to just tell you that its out of warranty but if you push they must have it repaired/replaced/ give a refund.

would the memory totally affect the laptop in that it shows absolute no signs of life. i know the memory is vital but i would imagine an LED should be lit up when i connect in the power cord. the pc was bought in pc world and is out of warranty by about 5-6 weeks. i would imagine that a big company such as pc world will not budge on the warranty being out of date. it may be worth a try but without warranty i would imagine i don't have a case to argue with them.

Thats my point they will try not to but legally they must. The reason for a warranty is basically to confuse people into thinking that after its up if anything goes wrong its not the shops problem.

So they must have it repaired for you, if you would like to check for your self on the consumer fourm http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=580

Im sure that you will see on there that just because a warranty is out that they don't need to fix it, they do.

    Hi Colm,

You should defiantly go back to PC World. Here is a link to the fourm http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=580 just ask a question there about what you should do when you laptop breaks out of warranty and I'm sure people will be able to give you detailed info about what to do.

But yes you can defiantly bring it back even when its out of warranty.

    Good Luck

Because you do not say why you know the charger is working, then I do not know if the charger is working. Some saw its light glows. The *knew* the defective charger is working. If you do not provide numbers, then nobody knows what you may have only assumed.

A laptop has two completely different power systems. One recharges its battery. Other operates the system. Is that charger recharging the battery? Then post numbers for the battery's spec voltage and what is actually measured. Replies are only as good as the facts you first provide. Without numbers, then only those with less knowledge can reply. The speculation is not helpful. For a useful answer, provide numbers for what you know or observe. Making a conclusion (ie power supply works) without saying why simply creates confusion.
