    Hi

I am a complete novice at IT so forgive me.

I have a basic laptop about 5 yrs old.

My c drive is 12.2gb free of 42.5 gb

Wondered if I can delete any of these programs to help free up space?

    Any of these essestial?
    Google chrome 299mb
    Nero 7 Essential 352mb
    Java 6 Update 7
    JAva 6 Update 3
    Java 6 Update 13
    Dassault Systemes software prerequisites
Windows live ID sign in assistant (don't use windows live but use hotmail)
    Search Guard plus
    Search Gueard Plus Updater
    conduit engine

Or has anyone any other ideas about cleaning up computer. I have avast for checking for virus and ccleaner by piriform and adware. Don't think i have any virus stuff. Really just want to free up some space for photoshop and lightroom programmes.

Apologies if I offend anyone with such basic questions...
    Thanks
    GG

Download, install and run this: Ccleaner.

It will clean up some space.

You can't just go around deleting folders. The likes of the google chrome one are applications. If you want to remove Google Chrome, uninstall it via the Control Panel.

Windirstat is also useful to run, showing you where your space is gone, not just in programs. Most of people's space usually ends up as music, pictures, movies and downloads.

When you download and run the scan go to the view tab and Show the Treemap.

    Thanks for your reply

Is that the same as Treesize?? I've done that and it shows that c drive is made up of 51.1% windows, 25.2% users (r these pics etc??), 14.5% program files, 5.1% program data, 4% files.

Thanks Alanstrainor. i have ccleaner (piriform) and have un it but its made no difference. If i unstalled some files like google chrome, and google maps would this make any real difference to the speed of the compter or am i wasting my time?

Have you deleted old restore points and run disc cleanup. I only keep one restore point.

To speed up the pc, run msconfig and stop non essential startup programs (not anti virus)

Usually, when i see that "conduit" thing on a computer, the first thing i do is download, install and update Malwarebytes Antimalware and run a full scan of the system.

You'd be very surprised what Malwarebytes will find on a system. Can also result in the speeding up of your computer...

its similar to treesize but you can see visually and in detail what files are the largest.

If you have 12 GB free space, I wouldn't worry too much about uninstalling programs, but you might check which are starting up automatically. Have a look next to the clock. Check TaskManager and see the CPU usage, also a defrag might be a good idea.

Actually i only just copped its a tiny hard drive by todays standards. You have a lot of free space. You only really need 15% and above to be comfortable. 28% is perfectly fine.

JavaRa | Download JavaRa software for free at SourceForge.net, it's a nice tool to update Java and remove older versions. Will free up a bit of space.
