    First obs on the comparison

    pros:
    price
    camera
    radio
    No need for iTunes

    con:
    Internal memory of 150megs
    battery life?

Internal memory isnt really a con... an 8gb MicroSD card wouldn't be very expensive and if you wish you can get one up to 32GB in size.

Samsung galaxy s is a nice phone, thats coming from a apple fanboy.

It's not an "iPhone Alternative". Android phones are better phones in their own right.

Looked at a few mini reviews of this and a lot of them are saying that its only a slightly fancier LG optimus one, and that phone is only about 200€ anyway so this cant really be considered a bargain. And anyway, no phone with a 3.2" screen would really be considered an iphone alternative. The iphone alternatives as most people would see them are phones like the Galaxy S and HTC Desire and you wont get any of them for anywhere near 180€

I'd recommend anyone thinking of buying this, have a look at the Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade. Can be got for £100 in the North, has a bigger, higher resolution, better quality screen, and same speed processor. However the camera is worse and it comes shipped with Android 2.1.

I'm sure the price will plummet in a few weeks when the Galaxy S II drops as well (sick of using blackberries myself and I'm torn between the S and the S II)

So you'd like to think so but if you look closely you'l see that the price of the average high end smartphone(like the galaxy s2) i still creeping up! They're pushing over 500€ at this stage. This means the original galaxy s wont drop to that low a level as soon as the galaxy s2 drops.

On an aside, given the shortage of the super amoled screens at the moment, i bet what samsung will do is continue the galaxy s just with a super lcd screen instead of the super amoled, and then drop the price..

It is an iPhone alternative. It's a good alternative to the iPhone 3G.

Does this work as a Sat Nav and if so would you need a Data Bundle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Ebbs

Really need a new phone...specs are much higher than similar priced phones in shops...

    Oh the temptations :/

Samsung super amoled screens look great. But Galaxy is housed in a cheap plastic body and has no camera flash. Also Samsung have a bad rep updating their handsets to latest versions of Android.

I'd personally wait for the forthcoming HTC dual core phones. Much better build and Android expertise IMHO.

Thats a fair criticism of the galaxy s but it would be unfair to label the s2 the same until it actually lands here.

In terms of the updates, the galaxy s is meant to be getting 2.3 gingerbread by the end of this month whereas the htc desire and desire HD will have to wait until around may apparently. Whats more, htc still seem to be launching high end phones with froyo(See the htc incredible s). Both of which suggest, htc aren't as nippy as they once were in releasing updates

ditto, you can't beat mid to high end HTC's for good solid build quality and they really know how to get the most out of android too. (imho to keep the ref happy ;))

    Better in what way?

I could understand if you said you prefer the iPhone 4 to any of the Android phones released at the moment but the iPhone 3Gs is neither significantly cheaper nor even nearly as good as the majority of Android phones.

It's all subjective, there is no 'better'.

Droids tend to have slow processors, I had a HTC Legend and then a HTC Wildfire. Both had difficulty with games, the keyboards were pokey, I made lots of mistakes when keying in data. Try playing Angry birds on iphone and you'll never go back to android!

Based on them two androids, the legend isnt particularly new or high end and has a 600mhz cpu. The wildfire is fairly recent but its the most basic android htc even make. Almost all high end androids of the last year have had cpu's of 1GHz so i think you'd need to compare the iphone to one of those.I have a galaxy s and it never lags when gaming!

The Wildfire is low-end in fact it's at the bottom of HTC's Range. The Legend is low-mid range. The iPhone however is the flagship of Apple's mobile department. Would you ever compare a BMW 1 Series with a Mercedes S Class? No you wouldn't. You should compare like to like. The flagship of HTC is the HTC Desire HD, the flagship of Apple is the iPhone 4.

All that's quite irrelevant though. This is a €180 sim free phone. You'd possibly get an iPhone 3G used for that price. For its spec the phone in this bargain alert is pretty good value.

I actually prefer Angry Birds on a HTC Desire over an iPhone.

...but that means nothing, Angry Birds is merely a diversion, and not a basis for choosing a phone. :p

play angry birds on a HTC Desire HD and you'll wonder how you could even see those little feathery b@stards on a piddly little iphone screen. :D

of course you will be occasionally distracted by the weight of the car battery you have to carry round on your back to keep the damn thing running, but you do get used to it. :)

Based on those dates, there's much in it tbh. Also I'd take "suggested" timeframes with a pinch of salt.

Both Samsung Nexus S and HTC Nexus One already have Gingerbread, don't they? There's not that much new in Gingerbread anyhow, new keyboard and some eyecandy.

Typed using my Gingerbread handset by the way ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

Well google themselves would be doing something wrong if their own phones, the nexus s and nexus one were not getting the updates first! You cant possible expect the other android phone makers to be as quick as google when all goolge have to do is get the stock android update out whereas HTC or Samsuing have to integrate their own UI into it. And its not as if even google are lightning quick either, gingergread was announced last December and the nexus one only got it a couple of weeked ago

Yes you can buy third party navigation that don't require data connection. What are the maps like? Are they comprehensive and up to date? Not sure, so just asking.

As for "Yes and Yes", I was referring to the standard Android satnav, which does require a data connection. Although with the latest version you can set a route whilst on wifi, and it'll cache the route and work without a data connection. May work fine so long as you don't veer off course and need to be re-routed ;)
