Im getting some work done on the back of my house in a few months and want to find out where the pipes that run under my back garden are, the man hole has been cemented closed so cant open that way, is there any local office that I can go to that will have a map of all underground pipes.

    Cheers

have you tried your local county council planning department, they might have the original plans of your house (unless it's really old), ie from when planning permission was sort to build.
or if the pipes are council pipes they may be able to tell you where to get information

You haven't advised if you are located in an urban area or not. The most accurate way to find out is to open up the manhole and trace the pipe. I certainly wouldn't be over reliant on "as constructed" drawings for information

    No.

Local authorities will maintain maps of all public drains which are typically located in the public roads and footpaths. They do not include layouts of drain runs within individual sites.* Drains within and running across individual sites are deemed private drains and all who connect into them have joint ownership and responsibility to maintain.

If you are going to start works it would be best to have done exploration works first i.e. dig some holes before works proper. That way no surprises for anyone later.

    * in some expectational cases only , public drains may run across private sites. It is nor permitted to build over in such cases.
