    Hi

I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction with a problem i have with my 2004 laguna 1.9dci.

When the engine is idling there is a rough noise (possibly like a worn bearing). The noise disappears when I press the clutch. I can select all gears as normal but when in gear if i depress the clutch there is no forward movement, i've tried first, second and reverse.
There were no signs that the clutch was slipping before this.
I've tried google but came up with nothing and i understand that it's impossible to fully diagnose without looking at the car and I should really go to a mechanic but my problem is this -
I traded the car in yesterday!
I'm to collect the new (used) car on wednesday. I rang the dealer and he said the deal was made on the basis of my car in running order. I'm going to have to work something out with him for a repair so I want to have an idea whats wrong with the car before his lads look at it and he gives me a cost.

    I'd appreciate any views please.

Unless you're planning to fix it, this forum won't give you the best answers. Ask a Mod and they'll move it to the normal
    Motors forum.

    thats what the clutch does.

its when you release the clutch that the car should start to move.

sounds like a problem with the release bearing perhaps. if the car is still driving (which i'm unsure of) i would have just kept my trap shut and traded it in.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

Thanks paintdoctor - can the mods move this thread to the main forum.

When i put my foot on the clutch i 'press' it. When i release the clutch i 'depress' it.
Car is going nowhere, foot off clutch in gear, engine turning over but thats it.

Did the fault appear suddenly or was there a gradual deterioration?

I thought possibly the gear changes were a little soft but no problem finding gears, no crunching. I went to pull out at a T junction, got 10 yards then i was revving a lot and going nowhere. No bangs or loud noises when it happened.

Dealer test drove the car yesterday also and didn't seem to find anything wrong.

Will the car stay running in lets say 3rd gear with your foot off the clutch but just isnt moving?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 200 ✭✭Octopus

Just tested all 5 gears. Car does not move at all. I don't feel even the slightest bite or attempt to bite in the clutch.

One thing i noticed is that the noise (from clutch/gearbox area) when i release the clutch gets louder with every gear from just audible in first to quite rough in 5th.

    Thanks so far, appreciated.

Most likely a cv joint or drive problem.

By drive problem do you mean drive shaft?

Would either of these be visible from under the car?

    Many thanks again

Clutch would still bite even if the CV joints were removed completely :)

Cv joint problem would be visible from the driveshaft spinning on that side but slipping at the joint.
If it was the inner joint, just the cup and the rubber boot may be spinning on the rhs shaft.
Lhs shaft you wouldnt see anything if the problem was on the inner joint.

Be very careful if you're going to check this, dont want to hear how someone got rolled over or wound in a driveshaft!!

teeth possibly ripped off centre of clutch disc. New clutch kit required probably. Maybe salesman took it for a rather hard drive the last day.

Laguna's have gearboxes made from metal thats about as tough as chocolate. Methinks the box of cog's has an issue, the noisy release bearing is a red herring.

I'm dropping it into my local mechanic first thing monday morning. As i drive a renault we're on first name terms :(

Once he finds what the problem is i'll see what the repair cost is versus what the dealer can do for me on the trade in deal.

Thanks again for all the help, I'll let you know next week what the craic was.

These are prone to dmf failure and give the symptoms you describe. The bearing fails and the two sections of the flywheel spin seperatly.

The bad news is that flywheels are not cheap and labour time for gearbox off on a laguna dci is high!

Worn spline on the drive shaft in the end.
Relieved as the costs of a flywheel or gearbox replacement wouldn't be worth getting repaired.

    That's a relief I'll bet!

    Cheers for the update Octopus.
