Hi All i have a question.
I bought the new iphone4 on Wednesday last .I went with 3 network as very good deal at the moment(well maybe). I live in Tipperary Town and i travel a bit around with work as i have been in offaly. north tipp so far since wednesday but the internet speed on the iphone has not been great poor actually.
But here is the thing my g/f lives in Galway city and when i got up here last nite the internet speed is as good as broadband from eircom in ur home its so so fast.
NOW MY QUESTION IS-IS ONLY DUBLIN,GALWAY BIG CITIES GOOD WITH 3 AND REST OF COUNTRY **** OR IS JUST SOMETHING UP WITH 3 AT THE MOMENT.
Im using there 3g network by the way. Any comments/replies would be great please as i have 14 days which to take this back if im not happy

Depends on the area, how many people are using it in the area, whether ir is using 3G or GPRS as back up Plenty of threads both here and the Three forum if you have a look. Some people find it great ( I do, eventually), and some don't.

BTW, no need to capitalise the middle sentence, it looks like you are shouting;)

When it comes to data, 3's Network sucks. End of story.
Our company used to have all mobiles with three. We have to travel a lot all around the country and three was just not cutting it with smartphones. It would be good in some places, but mostly terrible or even more often, unuseable.

We changed to another network and everyone is happy.

I do a lot of travelling to Dublin on the train and going from GPRS -> 3G areas can be very slow to switch and from Carlow to Heuston Station I have no 3G signal. However, when coming back from Dublin, I have a near constant 3G signal! They have a fantastic network in the cities though and I know that I rarely ever find myself without 3G signal in either Dublin City or Waterford City.

I would say you will have issues with connectivity in small towns and in areas with flaky 3G coverage. It's a known issue with the iPhone on Three that it takes a long time to switch back to 3G after it has been piggybacking on the other providers GPRS network. A workaround is to put the phone into airplane mode and then turn it off a few seconds later to force the phone to search for the best signal again. However, this can be a frustrating process and doesn't always work.

3's packages are very competitive but if you live in an area with poor coverage and rely on constant connectivity, then I'd recommend switching to a network with better coverage in the areas that you will find yourself in most often.

Get yourself a free 3 sim and put it in your current phone for a while, and see how you get on.

Hi whiterebel, thanks for ur answer but what would be the reson i would do this are u saying their service to pay as you go customers is different to bill. I just dont understand as i have signed up to a bill and have the phone in my hand now

My apologies, I had forgotten that. That was the standard advice for someone thinking of going to Three. The only real problem I have is that it is so slow handing over between GPRS and 3G.

OP did you have a read of the legendary 3 network problems thread on here? Must be the biggest non-sticky thread on here. It's the single biggest reason I advise nobody to go with 3.

But these were teething problems with the phone on the network and have since been resolved. If I was the OP, I'd pay no attention to that thread at all!

Not related to three directly but in general - specifically about the iPhone. I have been with Voda and o2 living in Dublin. Always was a nokia user. Most recently prior To the fantastic iPhone I was using n95 8 gb. Again, a super phone. There is absolutely no doubt that in areas within Dublin with low coverage( and they are plentiful ) the IPhone feels the hurt in comparison to the nokia - and It's possible all regular handsets - in these areas. A colleague has gone from a nokia to a 3 gs and now to ip4 and there is a definite difference between all handsets, gradually degrading as he improved. Not that this test is based on his home signal. I have tested my ip 4 and compared other handsets and it is fact. Thankfully, I see little affect in my usual haunts.

I know my friend who is on 3 in Athlone is having terrible trouble with there's coverage. Which makes sence as they have a very little amount of masts around Athlone countryside. Go on askcomreg.ie to check out the local masts

2055 posts says "stay away" to me.

That's not true at all, while there were some real problems posted at the start, 100s of other posts in that thread are from people who have never had any problems with 3 and posted to say so. 100s more are from iPhone users who aren't on 3 but felt expert enough to comment on a service they have no experience of or just moan about how crap 3 is and how wonderful VF or O2 are, school yard stuff. Ignore that thread, the fact that it's buried here somewhere suggests it's 15 minutes are long up.
