Cycle to Work Bikes

Probably discussed already on here but I need to rant!!

Why is there so many people selling bikes on donedeal / Gumtree extra that were obviously bought through the cycle to work scheme.

I know that people will always look for a quick buck, but the way people are flooding the sites with these bikes, only used once or twice, still with receipt etc is not of benefit to the cycling industry.

How do they think their bike will sell when 1000’s of people have the same idea. It’s not like their reducing the price that much, most are looking for the full price which is more than they bought it for on the work scheme.

I know some might be genuine cyclisyts upgrading but why not trade in the bike at the local bike store and upgrade.

The cycle to work scheme is a great idea to get people out and cycling and the number on the roads proves it has been a success to a certain degree, (that and petrol prices). But with all these bikes on the market are they driving prices up for everyone.

    Rant over.

How would a flood of second hand bikes drive up prices?

Rant to Revenue OP, tell them the scheme is being abused and that you are scandalised and outraged.

If anything they are providing competition to the bricks-and-mortor stores by selling online, and therefore keeping down prices for everyone.

Okay maybe I was looking at this the wrong way. Maybe it's good business.

The Government were giving people the chance to earn extra. Buy a bike on cycle scheme, get tax off and sell for more.

A good business could be started up by the boarders. advertise what bike you want and see what pops up on adverts.

... except, of course, that buying under the scheme with the intention of selling is against the rules (ie it's tax fraud)

I am sure most of the people who end up selling had good intentions when they set out. I also suspect very few buy a bike under the scheme with the specific intention of selling at a profit. Indeed, most people will only be on basic rate tax and the potential "profit" is probably not that much, particularly as a lot of the people who may be interested in buying a bike at that level could probably avail of the scheme themselves anyway
