Ireland's Barry Murphy sets sensational time in U.S.

Barry Murphy has set a very impressive time in the 100m breastroke at the beginning of March in the Indianapolis Grand Prix in the U.S.
His time (1:00.77mins) is currently the second fastest in the world this year in a race which saw him beat the Olympic champion, Katijima of Japan.
If Barry can build on this performance then we might have another exciting prospect in the pool come London 2012, (the other being Grainne Murphy).
    Any thoughts?

Give him credit guys; it's a great performance. There's no reason for unsubstantiated allegations of drug-taking.

Jesus lads the time isn't that fast. No need to jump to conclusions. A 1 second improvement wouldn't be totally unheard of and this time would probably barely get him out of the heats if repeated at the world championships.

Actually, the time is fast and to illustrate this, if you look at the 2010 world rankings, only three swimmers have dipped under 60 seconds. A further improvement by Barry would see him really challenging at the top of the event. However, I do agree with you that we should not be getting ahead of ourselves...we must see if he can consistently post fast times and indeed he needs to get his PB down to 60 seconds. But it is still a long time to go until London so he has plenty of time to progress further.
As for the drug-taking comments, they are childish and totally unfounded.

True but there are a lot of swimmers in and around his level and they'll be looking to improve too! But this seems to be the first time he's brought his 50m form to the 100m so maybe he can improve more...

I agree, there are about 20/30 swimmers capable of sub 1:01mins...but maybe this is the big breakthrough that he needed. Not only did he better his PB by about a second, he left behind him some big names including Kitajima, Sean Mahoney (U.S.A.) and other top swimmers....this should give him huge confidence to keep up the training and really kick on from here. However, we won't know until the worlds in Shanghai whether he is capable of really putting it up to these guys.

Folks, quit the unsubstantiated allegations and the back seat modding.

Great performance by Murphy, well done. Seems people were making unsubstantiated allegations of drug use, but would I be right in saying that in previous years his main focus was 50m events, in which he proved himself an excellent swimmer by reaching latter stages of various major championships, and that he has only recently begun to focus properly on the 100m events, which would probably explain his improvements.
This performance qualifies him for the Olympics, as it is inside the A standard (1:00.79) and took place at a designated qualifying meet within the designated qualification period (which began March 1st), so fair play to him on that, especially after narrowly missing out on Beijing.

Yeah, Barry's main event was always the 50m breastroke but he did compete in the 100m also, but never his main focus. I watched an interview with him after the race and he was completely gobsmacked by his own great performance. Hopefully now the performance instills the confidence in him to push on to even better times because he clearly has the talent. Two Murphys (Grainne and Barry) leading Ireland's challenge!

Wow, great time! I trained with him years ago (around 2002) and I remember him holding sub-25 seconds for quite a few 50 metres sprints in a row. Not bad for a young guy!

It means that the mods have thankfully snipped those petty unsubstantiated allegations from view, hence the message "snip".
