Hosting that complies with EU privacy directive

    Hi,

I've been asked by a client to investigate hosting options for him that complies with the EU privacy directive. It came to light when Fine Gael ran into problems with their new website for the election. Because the site is hosted in America they are unable to comply with the EC directive?

His domains are currently hosted in the US and the email hosted by Google. By having the email hosted by Google does this also run into data protection issues?

Can anyone recommend a new host that complies with the EU directives or do all EU hosting companies comply with it?

    Thanks

What kind of stuff is on their site? Customer info?

But the US should be fine...

I thought the main criticism for FG was down to them using foreign services as opposed to using Irish services at a time of massive job losses

Are you talking about the Patriot Act in the States ?

Ireland is the best in europe for data privacy with the data protection act, however be aware that companies such as amazon that might store your data in ireland are still subject to the Patriot Act as an american company.

As a general rule EU owned companies should be compliant, tho as sposs points out, the USA have wide reaching powers under the patriot act that means amazon, google, MS, etc, are subject to it, even if the data is in Ireland. The UK has similar provacy legislation.

If you are an Irish entitiry with serious data security and privacy concerns, your best bet is the data in Ireland with an Irish entity.
