I have just been quoated €399 inc VAT for a timing belt and waterpump change for my 2008 tdi passat in connollys in sligo. I think this is a good price? I have never heard anything bad about these guys? 2 year warranty on the job. Anybody have any advice on this?

Its a main dealer so hopefully all would be ok. It must be reasonably straight forward in those cars if that is the dealer pricing.

They quoted me around the €400 mark for a service, which included braking fluid, fuel filter and brake pads.

Got the lot done in Dublin for €220. they informed me the braking fluid was fine and there is never any need to change fuel filter. Was an 06 Golf.

I bought my car there, and above was the first time i didnt get it serviced there, the fact that they are an authorised dealer i think makes them feel they can charge that little bit extra.

As other posters have said if you want it done by authorised dealer then go with them, otherwise i would shop around to see if you can get it cheaper elsewhere.

    Hi redders825,

i actually found there price the cheapest around. I rang a few independent traders and they all quoated around 450-500 cash!!! But they only give 1 year warranty. I just read my service book and vw germany recommend you change your break fluid every 2 years! At that stage it probably consists of 80% water, so iguess your 06 golf is well due a change (if you like being able to stop).

So you really didnt get the lot done then did you. Add brake fluid change at 50 to 60 euro and a new fuel filter plus its labour to your 220 and you are over €300 anyway. Considering that the pads you got probably cost €30 retail compared to €80 for the genuine, then there is not a whole lot in it price wise.

Does that price for the t/belt change include a service? Did you got o other garages? What ones and what were the quotes from them?

How many kilometers are on the clock of your Passat

A price for a timing belt NEVER includes a service - why would it?

Thats true Mick and the brake fluid should have been changed aswell. You have to compare like for like. That was a very good price OP for a belt change.

Normally when I send in a car to have the t/belt etc done I'd get everything else done as well. Seems only right to me that the car is already in for the t/belt that you would change the oil and filters as well.

I also find it kinda funny that OP signed up especially to praised a company and its price but thats just me

I'd presume your brake fluid was definitely due, and based on the fact that they advised you not to change your brake fluid I'd worry that the other repairers are cutting corners to give you that cheap price.

    IMHO anyway...

My old wan changed her car today. Connollys was over 2k more than the Dealer in Roscommon.

I guess something has to pay for all that glass and the 3 suits sitting there drinking coffee all day.

Believe it or not, when I got my Passat TDi done in a VW main dealer over 2 years ago, I asked them how much to do a service at the same time.......It was like I had asked them to move the moon over a bit....:D They actually did it, and cut the bill down by about €100.....

I don't get why anyone or even any garage wouldn't just do a service at the same time? You already have the car on a hoist and an oil and filter change wouldn't take much longer to do....if any longer

I was thinking that too Mick. I was up there yesterday they have a nice B7 Passat with all the extras. The sales man wasnt very impressed with my 07 poverty spec high miler...

I had to laugh when I thought of this thread and who posted sbout the glass palace and the three suits drinking coffee because thats what they were doing!!!!. I couldnt take the dude seriously..:D

I cannot agree with you here John because you acn do a timing belt without a lift on a Passat a secondly it only takes 2 seconds to put a car on a lift to service it. It do not make service any easier when you have the belt and water pump off...

What I have in mind more so is that the car is already in the garage for major work to be done. A service at the same time isn't going to add a whole lots of labour etc. on to the job and would in all reality be more convenient for the customer.

Any t/belt I've had done has been at service time as the mileages tend to closely coincide. It would be a waste to have a service done and then be back a month later for a t/belt

I see your point allright but a lot of services wont match the belt change well not mine anyway because I service myself. I am due a brake fluid change about 200k kms ago so I must do that with the belt the next time..:P

That reminds me I must change mine at the next service. Everything else is stamped apart from the brake fluid change. Tyres are getting a bit worn too. Its going to be an expensive service I think

I have a good tyre guy at home. I'm a stickler for spending local, plus for 4 new tyres, balancing and tracking I can negotiate a discount ;)

Wrong, i told him if it needed to be changed then change it so he could have charged me if needed! as said i have had the car serviced in KCCS in Sligo since i purchased it, so my braking fluid has been changed since i purchased it!

As i said, go with them, but shop around, and as you have said they were the cheapest so theres your answer! i had my timing belt changed with them also, no problems since.

So you are saying because the main dealer did your service work properly, you can now get another garage to take this shortcut for a cheaper price. You can then say the dealers are expensive and your guy is cheap even though you are not comparing like with like or following manufacturer intervals.
Next time around when brake fluid is surely to be done, will you use dealer and call them robbing bastards again or will you use your indy friend and realise that when he does everything he should,he is not far from dealer pricing.

i never said they were robbing bastards! the difference in the cost of any brake fluid change is very small. Apologies if my original post was not clear, as said, i found them expensive, if your happy with the price go with them, as they are the authorised dealer.

    You need to relax!

I dont use main dealers unless I have too:)

    Fair enough!

i wasnt trying to be misleading at all, just my 2 cents! as said Connolys have serviced my car on probably 5 occasions and ive had no problem with the work.

    That is all.
