i have been growing 26 acers of maize for ten years and the cost is getting to much to justify it anymore. so i was wondering if i reseed it in early april how much silage would i get and when do you think it would be ready to cut.

Did something similar last year, set late April, cut 10 July, but got a dry period last May that didn’t suit and alot of weeds came. Am going to undersow this year to avoid the weeds. Got about 8 bales/acre

What are you going to undersow Jeff?? Barley & peas??

I reseeded last september and I have a lovely coat of grass coming now. The sheep will eat it next week to thicken it up but I should have silage ready to cut off it by mid June. I've never had a problem with weeds on an autumn reseed - but it looks to be a major problem for the spring reseeders.

Not entirely sure yet, have done spring barley on its own before and also Forage extra from Agritech. May try the stuff Whealan grew last year and reseed in the fall.

What is the cost this year? Is the seed gone up? The fertilizer and plastic will be up anyway, we all know that :(

If you were using the the land for silage only you could reseed it with Italian ryegrass and red clover. It would last 3 years with excellent yields and no need for chemical nitrogen.
