Just wondering if anyone on here does it and whats the best way to do it?

Currently driving a old non-turbo diesel, so can i just go to Lidl and buy litres of cooking oil at 99c /1L?

Or rob some of the local chino?

Too late to search for the links from this forum so I'll just post this

It's more dependent on what fuel pump you have than if the car has a turbo or not. I ran a Rover 420 diesel on a 60/40 diesel / veg oil mix for a tank or two out of curiosity. At the time the veg oil was €0.60/litre for Tesco's finest in 3L bottles. No effect on mpg or anything, I did it in a February or March iirc and had no bother with starting from cold. I reckoned for it to be practical you'd have to be getting the veg oil in ideally 25L drums as playing around with loads of bottles is a pain. Longterm it may well degrade certain rubber components of your fuel system. Also there was a noticeable smell from the exhaust emissions.

I would imagine the local chinese may be able to advise you where you can get bigger drums or they may be interested in selling some to you for cash.

Some folks filter used veg oil after decanting off the water and other stuff and use that, awful mess and requires some investment in tanks and whatnot.

That sounds like PPO, not BioDiesel.

Just started running my 1998 freelander on waste veg oil.
    What car have you got?

You can do a few tests to see how it runs first.
I put a coke bottle of oil on the fuel line and it ran fine for a 5 mile run, so i then tried a 25% WVO 75% Diesel for a tank. Put 25% diesel and 75% WVO last night and started and ran great today. It might be my imagination, but the engine runs a little quieter on veg oil.

Probably the perfect age and type for running on veg oil. If its the 2C-III engine it has a bosch pump, which is best for running veg oil. Not sure is it Direct Injection? My jeep is DI, not ideal, but i've no problems yet (early days though).

A lot of people confuse biodiesel with Veg oil, they are not the same thing.
Biodiesel is a standardised, high qualiity fuel with almost the same performance as fossil diesel. Most cars made before 2004 will run start and run on biodiesel without any modification. Because of biodiesels very high lubricity many drivers notice a marked improvement in smoothness and engine noise. Some cars after 2004 have diesel particulate filters fitted and should not be used with biodiesel.
Veg oil has a very high viscosity and puts the injector pump under considerable stress. This is why only cars with very robust injector pumps, mid nineties Mercedes and Volkswagens will survive for long on high blends of veg oil. A preheater conversion kit helps reduce this problem but even preheated veg oil does not burn completely in a diesel engine, hence the smell from the exhaust and the eventual buildup of deposits in the injection system.
I have been making biodiesel legally for four years.
I make 150 litres of biodiesel every other Saturday at my workshop in Lismore Co. Waterford. I use it in my car and my heating boiler and it currently costs 14 cents per litre.
If you want to see biodiesel being made <snip - PM imakebiodiesel> for details of the next demonstration

My car is a 2010 Octavia CR170 engine with a DPF... A I to understand that if I remove the DPF and remap to suit I could actually use bio-diesel?

How are you legally making Bio-diesel for 14c when it's taxed at the standard rate for diesel fuel, are you informing revenue and paying the duty?
Can't make out for sure if it's €60 or €465 per 1000l, is it taxed as propellant or fuel oil?
Heavy Oil (rates shown include carbon charge)
Used as a propellant 465.70 per 1,000 litres

Fuel oil 60.73 per 1,000 litres
Other heavy oil (including MGO) 88.66 per 1,000 litres

I never use veg oil as fuel so I would not know about suitability of various vehicles.
Lots of people have DPFs removed and remapped, usually for performance and economy reasons. If you had that done there is no reason why your engine should not run on biodiesel or biodiesel blends. If the engine has common rail type injection you must be careful to ensure that the fuel is completely dry, because water in either diesel or biodiesel can do damage to the injection system. It is good practice to dry biodiesel down to 200ppm ( parts per million) , the industry standard is 500ppm.

Was filling up with Diesel today (For the last time, hurrah!) and there was a Cork City Countil van with a sticker on it 'This vehicle is running on Biofuel' filling up with the same Diesel next to me.

14 cents is what it costs me to make a litre of biodiesel in terms of , raw material, chemicals and electricity. I then pay 42 cent tax on every litre to the taxman so my total bill is 56 cents per litre for road use.
If I use the biodiesel for heating oil I only have to pay 4.7 cents tax so the total cost of my heating oil is 18.7 cents.
I make 150 litres at a time and it takes about 3 hours.

Have you considered making up starter kits for sale :) You would probably get a lot of interest from the masses.

I do build biodiesel processors for customers but i dont like to advertise on this type of forum, My reason for posting here was to provide accurate information about biodiesel. <snip phone number - PM imakebiodiesel for info> if you want more info or come along to a demonstration to see biodiesel being made.

Apologies about the phone number, I only got round to reading the welcome message this morning. Its not my intention to promote my business here.

If anyone would like to see biodiesel being made I am doing a demonstration on Saturday 7th May at 9.30am. I will be making 150 litres of high quality fuel. You will also be able to see my central heating boiler which runs on waste veg oil. It has kept our house cozy and warm for 3 winters now at a total cost of zero euros.:)
    All are welcome, no charge
My address is The Railway Station , Lismore, Co. Waterford.
Pm me for details or directions if you need them.
