Interested in buying a diesel car 08/09 with a decent size boot to do about 30,000 km a year. I'm thinking about either a focus saloon 1.6 tdci or vw jetta 1.9tdi. How do you think they compare for reliability and which would you recommend.

    I'd take the Jetta.

More old school engine than the Focus but more reliable in general practice as you don't have to worry about the emissions technology playing up and other issues associated with high tech diesels.

It depends what you want really, the anti-VW brigade will be alone soon though

140k on my Focus TDCi, and pretty much faultless bar a flywheel a few years ago.

The 1.8 TDCi in the focus as fitted in 08/09 is far from a high tech engine, it is common rail, and far quieter than the TDi, but otherwise similar, e.g. no DPF, 8v.

Saying a VW is "more reliable in general practice" than a Ford is not borne out in reality.

I never realised the older unit was available up until that time, I was thinking about the 1.6HDI unit from PSA.

My families experience with Fords has been patchy, I currently have a Passat TDI 105bhp which is pretty old school but reliable in my experience. A lot can also go down to how the car has been maintained

Focus hatchback boot is alot more practical than the saloon as the boot opening in the saloon is narrow. If you need a big boot then you are better off with a hatchback.

    So is the VW.

    And quieter? Ha ha ha.

OP I would go for the VW meself, but I am kinda biased.

Generally wouldn't go for ford .... my friend had 04 ford fiesta with 1.4 tdci engine ... well engine fine.... but French electronic falls .... too much trouble with electronic on regular basis . Vw way its to go.
