Question about Rent Relief Tax Credit

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

I'm currently sharing an apartment. My flatmate owns the apartment and I pay my rent into her bank account.

I have no idea if she declares this income or whatever.

I looked at claiming the tax relief for this online and it says the landlord's PPS number is not compulsary.

Do they check out the situation re my landlord's tax and declaration of the income she gets from the rent etc before they give me my tax back?

If the landlord doesn't declare to revenue or whatever, can I still claim the tax credit or would it cause trouble? Thanks

hi there. i was in the same position last year. i enquired in the tax office about this not so long ago and she basically said if they werent registered landlord then i couldnt claim back. she didnt really go into much more detail about it,and too be honest i didnt dwell on it too much more incase i ended up landing my friend in it or that. haha. even though i thought i read something before on some website, saying that they didnt have to be registered, that all you need is there pps number and few details, but i could be wrong though! its a hard one so it is! but a bit of a bummer cause lived there nearly year and a half

Given the general prohibition on property discussions, the most I can say is look up the revenue website and familiarise yourself with:

Position for your flatmate (rent-a room relief)
Position for you (rent tax credit)

With regard to the specific comment on registration, it's your flatmate's principal home and the income qualifies for rent a room relief then I understand that the requirements of the PRTB to register the tenancy are not applicable, but again, review the documentation on the revenue website.
