    Hi,

this gorgeous boy was wandering around Mullaghmore beach last night. He eventually joined us walking back to the car.Noone was around so we brought him home with us to make sure nothing happens to him.We have informed the gardai, and we will be putting up posters today in the local shops and run to the vet to scan for a chip.He has a collar and is very gentle, definitly an indoor dog. Also thinking of contacting greyhound rescue who might be able to tell us more by the tatoo. He tends to respond to 'Pat' or 'pet"Anyone anymore ideas what we could do to find the owner?

Thanks Joyce, rang the dog warden this morning, they had been notified of the dog yesterday apparently as well. Was delighted to have been able to get our hands on him before them(I have huge difficulties with the 5 day term)..left my phone number with him, but he did not seem to interested. Hopefully we will find the owner.

Well done for taking him in. If only more people were like you! He is gorgeous and looks so much like a greyhound I rescued. Please keep us informed of his progress.

I know I'm not a fan of the pound ,I dread to think what might happen when they get their hands on them,,,fingers crossed you'll find the owner..

am just wondering..he's a gorgeous guy, very placid, does anyone know if they can be trained to accept cats..? it's just a very far possibility if we can't find the owner, and can't find him a good solid home we will keep him.(even though my partner and I both said yesterday-no we ARE NOT going to keep him) it might well end up with that as the POUND is a gib nono. But, he seems to have a keen interest in cats..and we own 13..so can he be retrained..?

    ok, update.

A guy came forward, from mayo, claiming he sold Pat the greyhound to some chap in donegal, couldn't come up with a name, phone number or any details. OH told him he will hand his details to the gards so he can discuss with them. I think i am smelling a very big fish, someone trying to get his hands on an un neutered greyhound? thoughts..?

did you get him scanned for a chip?

i took in a dog once and put an ad on the local radio. I did not descibe the dog or give any pics of him on purpose as anyone could claim him then even if they did not own him.
I got a phonecall and the guy wanted to call for him (got the right breed and colour) but I was hesitant until he told me the dogs name and I checked........called the name and dog came galloping. when the man came the dog was thrilled and jumped into the car. As close a check as I could do in the absence of tags and chip!

Proceed with caution. Unless he has proof of ownership I personally wouldn't hand over the dog to this person. Greyhounds and lurchers can attract attention from people who you most certainly would not under any circumstances want getting hold of the dog. It sounds to me like he is chancing his luck.

Pet greyhounds, particularly ones who have come through adoption programmes tend to be neutered already. The fact that he isn't neutered makes it less likely that he is a missing pet (in my opinion anyway) My guess would be that he may have been dumped like so many others are.

Has he been scanned at the vets for a microchip?

yeah, he does not have a chip. he is tatood, would assume the 'owner' should know the tatoo number? he gave us the name, and the dog does respond to it...

Firstly, I would let him do the running. If he comes back to you I would ask him for the tattoos. I agree that he should know these if he is the owner.

I know one of my dogs would respond to any name I called him:D. I think some dogs are just more responsive to the way names are said in a particular voice so I wouldn't necessarily let the fact that he seems to be responding to a name be the decider.

Its a tough one as obviously if he is the owner you want to reunite him but he could also be someone chancing his luck and that's the worry. The person whose details I pm'd yesterday may be able to advise you on what to do in this situation

Thats fine then, he sold the dog, therefore he is no longer the owner and has no claim to him surely?

You could ask the man which veterinary practice he uses and the vet may be able to help verify the ownership.

after we pointed him to the gardai he did not contact us again. And, in all honesty, what kind of person sells a dog to someone and doesn't even remeber who he sold him to? Not sure if I would want that guy to get his hands on him again.Given the fact that he was also quite underweight as the vet confirmed yesterday..

We will wait for another 2 days to give the previous 'owner' a chance to get his affairs in order and contact us, after that we will start the rehoming process with a decent rescue. We can't keep him, we have 5 and he just doesn't get along with cats..:(

I recently got a link for a sighthound rehoming website http://rigalireland.wordpress.com/ It's not a charity but it was set up to help people rehome sighthounds and they put dogs up from rescues as well as pounds so they'd probably put Pat up if you do have to rehome him

yeah, I'm in touch with them. They are really good. Still angry though at 'owner' grrrrrrrrrrrr:mad:

Don't waste your time being angry at the so-called owner. This thing happens with greyhounds ALL THE TIME.

Yes, many greyhounds can be trained to live with cats.

There are a few different ways to do it.

Also, great that you didn't give him back or give him to the pound.

Will be in touch to see if I can help you.

    Hi all,

thought i'd let you know what happened over the weekend:

Aftre contacting the so called owner, who changed his story from stating the dog was sold to the dog being stolen, and us refusing to hand Pat back to him, he rang the gardai. And boy, did he regret that.Aftre us informing the gardai that, when selling a greyhound, you have to change the registration of ownership within 2 weeks (ICC rules), the gardai turned straight to the owner telling him we would rehome the dog through paws, he would NOT get the dog back and he'd better make a decent donation to paws for taking the dog in. if he wants off lightly. otherwise he would be charged with:

    - leaving a greyhound unsupervised and unmuzzled in public
    - any possible damage to any lifestock between the so called day of sale and day of finding
    - neglect

delighted to say the 'owner' wised up and is donating funds to paws.

Pat will be going to paws on saturday, and they will find him the best possible home. In between, for the next 5 days that he is with us, he will be spoilt rotten, brought up to weight and be a little bit more socialised as he has no real clue about how to be with the other dogs..he's alreday been growled at a good few times because he simply does not obey packrules..because he doens't understand them.So we are hoping to be able to help him a bit in the right direction.
But, i am delighted to see how helpfull the gardai can be and I have to concluide that there is hope for Irelands animal welfare because there is good people out there and eventually we will become the majority who will make a change.
    Kit.:)

    Hi Tilly,

the only ones who came forward with space.I wouldn't call them local, they are 3 hours away from us, but at least he is safe.

    Fair play to you Kit.

FAir play. Really well done. Our own greyhound is a rescue from being unceremonially dumped like pat. I just hope he get the good home he deserves. Some people deserve to be thrown in jail for how they treat dogs
