So I am planning to save up and get me a new tv for my room, flat screen I'd say, to play my X360 and my Wii. Looking around 21" to 30" nothing mad big.
But I want the best sound in the tv (my dad has a Hi-sence, or whatever its call, and sound is rubbish/tinny!) and best screen on a budget of say around €300. What would you guys on here recommend to me to get in the next few months?
What should I be looking out for?

    Thanks ya'll!

Ah thanks man, I didnt even think of the MPEG4 thing at all. That LG one you linked to seems pretty cool. 22" though, might go have a look in Currys see what its like.

mpeg4 is very important, im getting Irish DTT through a sony 32" right now and its great, research a telly carefully if the price is too good to be true, a lot of TVs on the market are still MPEG2...

In a quick overview what is the difference between mpeg2 and mpeg4, is it like pal and jap and ntsc or whatever its called?

I suppose you might be able to make that comparison, but more accurately, MPEG2 and MPEG4 are both encoding schemes/standards for video. PAL and NTSC have fundamental limitations/differences in the information contained therein, e.g. different frame rates, and different amount of scan lines. They were opposing standards developed around the same time. The two MPEG standards are different in that they refer to digital encoding, and could in theory be used with either PAL or NTSC in that manner. MPEG4 is a newer standard than MPEG2, rather than them being opposing standards of similar vintage like PAL and NTSC were.

As far as I know almost any TV that can handle MPEG4 (used by Irish DTT, or Saorview) should be able to handle MPEG2 (used by UK DTT, or Freeview), but with MPEG2 being an older standard, the reverse is not true, and you need to check that a TV handles MPEG4.

Thanks cython for explaining that so clearly to me. So I will look for MPEG4 and nothing less.

unless you are getting an incredible deal, it would be wise to just look for MPEG4 tellys, otherwise you would need to buy a separate Setbox for Irish DTT. better to have it in the telly and in HD already i say...

    Hi again!
So I've been looking into getting a Walker WP3211LCD as the price is pretty good but cant really find any reviews on it.
Does anyone on here know anything about it or can recommend it to me? Whats the sound like and is the picture clear?

Remember, I am mainly using this tv for my xbox360 and Wii, with little use for watching tv but good to have the option later on in years for the MPEG4.

One more month and I shall be buying..

Stay away from this tv if your using it for gaming, its woeful , my son has it and a sdtv has a better picture, as for sound , well think headphones that cost 4.99 and your close. honestly wait till you have an extra 80 to 100 eur0 and buy a samsung , sony etc.

    Really!? Thanks man.
Will save up the extra monies so and get a Sony or Samsung, seem to be the best.

does your son have his console connected properly? connecting a 360 or PS3 with SCART to a HDTV would be worse than an SDTV. I would have thought that Walker with Component or HDMI would look OK...

fair enough. if the OP can muster up an extra 100 quid, you can get a Full HD, decent branded, Saorview Compatible 32" telly.

Harveys are doing a topish of the range samsung 32" 1080p lcd for 349.00 at the moment , thats only 49 quid over op's budget .:D its in todays daily star.

also to add, well worth to see if you can afford a TV that can receive Free to Air(FTA) or FreeSat. As far as I know, most freeview HD telly can receive FTA HD as well. best to ask about it before purchase though.

well worth it if you are not on Sky, my sony telly receives BBC HD, ITV1 HD, Channel 4 HD as well as the other SD FTA channels. well worth it when you can watch things like the rugby or Champions League in HD.

I was in my local tesco during the week and i happened to see a 32" Samsung, full HD AFAIR, 2 HDMI, for €299. The label was marked as having the offer ending the 18th but the hardware manager told me it's running for another week or 10 days and they had about 10 in stock. I will try to get the model no: up later but if your near a tesco it might be worth a look, especially if you know someone working there ;)

    Bump :P

So I am moving soon and found a place, the room is small so dont think I could fit in a 32" flat screen sadly:(, so I have decided to go with a smaller one, maybe around 22" to (i dont know) 26" somewhere.

I know what to look for but any recommendations would be great again guys!!!!

I simply wont play a console on a screen bigger than my 23" monitor now. I used to use my 32" 1080p but the pixelation at that size is distracting. I sit up next to my screen like on a pc and at 23" it looks beautiful and plays amazingly! Best advice, buy a great chair and a smaller screen and sit up next to it all comfy like!

    My screen: http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/2701048/art/lg/w2361v-pf-23-tft-widescre.html

    Awesome chair: http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/9003826/Trail/searchtext%3EX+ROCKER.htm

Im telling you now man I just saw your above post there and you have to buy a smaller one, dont buy a TV unless you really want it for the tv inputs, if you will get by with HDMI then buy the screen I just posted, I promise you wont be disappointed. I'm a photographer, digital artist and a gamer both on PC and xbox. I've had around 5 monitors in the last 10 months and this one is easily the best colour balance size and quality and for a killer price. Im buying a second one soon!

i use a 42" LED samsung 1080p , i just had to comment as its just an amazing gaming experience , in saying that it cost 1500 quid so not really suitable for the OP, i do like the gaming chair , i have an xrocker but its the one thats ground level , i also sit up close as its the only way i play now, when i move my system downstairs at night when the GF goes to bed , its just not the same playing the like of Call of Duty , i cant hit a barndoor with a football as im a good 6-7 feet away:mad:

a lot of Pc gamers prefer the small screen , it just rather the big one myself , different strokes i guess.

yeah your right there it really is about whatever you get used to I think rather than one being better than the other! I think what we all agree on though is a comfortable seat to lounge out on! If your not sitting comfy you cant play as good as you potentially can because your just going to be awkwardly shifting around all the time!

very true , i have the exact same tv as i do upstairs , downstairs , and i made the stupid decision to place it above the fireplace. now this is fine for viewing tv , but as for gaming its just plain stupid , its just a little thing but it makes a huge difference to gameplay , i find anyhow.
