I don't really care. On the plus side he has the qualifications required.
Dr. Ahearne's areas of expertise are macroeconomics and international finance. His research includes studies on property markets in Ireland and other industrial countries; global current account imbalances and exchange rates; services sector growth; and the economic performance of the euro area.
Dr. Ahearne received a B.B.S. from the University of Limerick in 1989, an M.Econ.Sc. from University College Dublin in 1991 and an M.Sc. (1995) and a Ph.D. (1998), both in economics, from Carnegie Mellon University. At Carnegie Mellon, he received several awards and honours, including the William Larimer Mellon Doctoral Fellowship (1993-1996) and the Excellence in Teaching Award (1997). His Ph.D. dissertation advisor at Carnegie Mellon was Finn Kydland, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics in 2004.

IN ONE OF his final acts as finance minister Brian Lenihan has appointed his economic advisor to the Central Bank commission.
Dr Alan Ahearne had been Lenihan’s special advisor since March 2009, taking leave from his post as a lecturer in economics at NUI Galway.

S how do you feel about that?
Should he even have a right to make any decisions at all?

My granny sat me down last night and announced proudly that I was related to him. When I asked her how, she spent a half hour tracing a labyrinthine geneology of cousins and second cousins, once, twice, and thrice removed, more complicated than any mathematical equation. So, I have to be for his appointment- he's family!:D

In fairness, I'm not for these last minute appointments, but the outgoing government could have made a signicant number more yesterday and chose not to.

    Jobs for the boys!

Good old Fianna Fáil. You'll miss them when they're gone.

, it is ok to have qualifications it is the use one makes of them, how many advisers had the last goverment i wonder, how much have they cost us, was their advice taken, or was it bits of the advicee that suited which was taken.

This might indicate a possible answer to part of your above question: http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/cabinet-ignored-department-advice-on-economy-report-finds-495577.html

I agree they shouldn't be making calls that is not theirs to make anymore when they practically flushed the country down the toilet.

Grr. Isn't Ahearne the guy who spent the summer of 2008 predicting a dire future? The same guy who mysteriously fell quiet as soon as the government became his employer???

To me it's just another example of the contempt in which politicians in general, hold the taxpayer. Spending other people's money is one talent which they all have in spades.

    So it could've been worse?
If I were in the newly formed government I would look closely at everything they passed in recent weeks, if only based on the nature of the party as I'm sure they stayed true to form so they can individually call in favours even out of government.

He had previously worked as a senior economist on the board of the US Federal Reserve for seven years.
Utterly disgraceful that someone as qualified and experienced in the field should be appointed.

    Appalling.
