Ditching car for public transport?

Has anyone done so and how did you find it?
Situation, is we’ve two cars in the household but proposal is for me to get rid of my car and take advantage of taxsaver tickets etc and save on insurance/motor tax and the like.
I only definitely need access to car one day a week and we are close to public transport, which I have been using more and more due to lack of parking/cost of it in city centre.
Reason this is arising now for me is the fact that my car is due for tax/motor insurance soon and it’s going to cost the goods of 1K to renew. It’s not a new car, and doesn’t cost me much anything and I’d be insured on partners car, and use at weekends.
Few factors involved in decision, cost of insurance, motor tax, rising price of fuel etc are all factors.
Just wondering has anyone else made a similar move? How did they find it? Any regrets?

Forget PT and switch to a bike if you can. Far cheaper, healthier, generally quicker at rush hour over short-med distances than either car or PT and work may even pay for a good deal of it through the bike 2 work scheme :)

I'd agree with cookie monster... of course it depends how far you are from work...

It also depends what PT service you're close to.... so if you're near a luas/train which won't be subject to much delay as opposed to a bus line with no bus corridor, PT is ****...

For instance, I'm on a bus route even with a bus corridor, but it would still be quicker for me to drive into town than to get a bus...

If you absolutely must keep your car, some insurance companies (Allianz I think) are offering discounts on insurance to people with taxsaver tickets. Might be worth looking into.

When the economy collapsed and Dublin bus started selling buses I said it was wrong, because whatever happens with the economy, we will need a good public transport system.

If the economy picks up we need buses to bring people to workplaces, If it doesn't then people start getting rid of their cars and need public transport.

Dublin bus don't have much choice with the cutbacks in funding from the government, We will have any number of banks, but we will have to walk to them.
