    folks noticed one of my cows there last week, she has a strong calf but one of her spins was clearly not being sucked, she wasnt sick or anything. stuck her in crush and found the tit had a bad cut just near the top ,drew out some amount of puss, anyway the tip of the tit if you like has since fallen off, ive given her a course of anti biotics and have been drawing it twice daily, very little puss coming out now but this clear enough gooey stuff, should i keep drawing her off for another while , that tit is surely fecked anyway or whats the best thing to do??

    is she a milky cow? if not I reckon it will dry up itself if its not producing much but keep a close eye to make sure she doesnt get sick. Maybe give your vet a call and see what he/she thinks.

    ya she is, well the vet suggested the course of betamox or whatever its called which i gave her, of course she is one of the cows that wont lie on cubicle so the tit is covered in muck every day, as you say it will probably dry away although still a fair bit of the clearish stuff coming out this morning, will stay at it for another while.. i note the comment about removing her tit with the burdizzo has been removed, was that by a mod or the poster?

    I was a bit shocked by it tbh. I've had a number of cows over the years that got cuts and had similar problems to yours. I never, ever heard of removing the tit.

    ya i dont think there is any need to cut off, worst case ive seen the vet cut a slit and that seems to do the same job, feckin mastitis is a dose of a thing

    Vet will often put a cut or a slit to let the corruption flow out of it - but only if you cannot milk it through the hole in the tit.
    I've never heard of a vet cutting it off though :eek:

    Anyone thinking of doing it should take off their own nipple with a Burdizzo first, to be sure they have perfected the technique

    let the infection out by what ever means, what ever method will drain the infected quarter the quickest. keep it open till your sure every thing is out.
    <mod snip>
    would stay well clear of letting a cow with a open infected quarter in to the cubicles for fear of spreading to other cows

    Without starting a new thread lads, Have a second calver that had a calf 1 week ago. She has a wart or something like it on one of the back tits. The calf wont go near it yet, I'm hoping he will in the next few days or so but will probably have to take a bit from her. If I were to cut that off would she bleed? I seen that happen before with an animal with a wart. Rare thing though.
    Any suggestions welcome lads.

    OK. I think we've had enough of the DIY amputation posts TBH. That type of work is best left to your local vet as s/he has the knowledge/means/medicines to carry out the practice, if necessary, safely, hygienically and with the least amount of pain to the animal.

    Apart from that aspect. Those comments also cast some farmers as cruel, and I would have to say that as a farmer I could only but agree with that view of such practices.

    Please remember, this is a Public board, anyone and everyone can read your comments and they can reflect badly on us all.
