    Yo.

Been watching anime now for a few years and i have covered almost all of the mainstream to semi-mainstream stuff. And here in lies the problem. If i was to do a search for best anime i find many of the same ones or really bad anime picked by people who rate anything with 5 star award. However its become obvious to me that if i don't ask a community of fellow anime-heads, then i will most likely get no where.

It would be daft to give you a list of all the animes i have watched as it would eclipse the point of the thread, instead i will name a few of the most common so they are not mentioned.

    Naruto (shippuden also)
    Bleach
    Kaiji
    Death Note
    Berserk
    Code Geass (and R2 ofc)
    Desert Punk
    Avatar Legend of Aang
    FMA (brotherhood also)
    Claymore
    Elfen lied
    Cowboy bebop
    D.Gray-man
    Gantz
    Dragonball (full)
    Highschool of the Dead

I've also seen almost any anime you can name with romance, ecchi or vampires.

What i'm looking for are either:

    1. Good psychological dramas, intense and nerve wrecking.
    2. Dramatic without the silly predictable female superiority and male stupidity (In other words i have seen almost any anime you can name where the story has something to do with a sad pathetic guy in school who meets some amazing girl with super powers)
    3. Very sad, tear jerking anime, realistic enough but futuristic is ok (preferably no comedy)
    4. Superpower anime where the hero begins as a novice but gets better.

I've gotten extremely pissed off with the vampire genre of anime as its just the same thing over and over again, no variation. So please if you do suggest let it have nothing to do with that. Again i am looking for people who have gone off from mainstream and have found excellent animes that would be in the age group range of 17+.

I would be very thankful if you could help me out.

    Thank you.

One Piece. Its about a guy made of rubber who took a bite of Gum Gum.

I wasn't aware "Vampire" was a genre. Also, don't you think you're being too restrictive in what you're looking for?

That aside, here's a lot of stuff I feel is quite good.

    Bakemonogatari
    Katanagatari
    The Tatami Galaxy
    Baccano!
    Durarara!!
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
    One Piece
    Macross Frontier (TV series)
    Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
    Samurai Champloo
    Eden of the East
Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still
    Mobile Suit Gundam (Movie Trilogy)
    FLCL
Gunbuster 2: Diebuster (Aim For the Top 2)

The list above is pretty awesome, a couple I'd add are:

ef - a tale of memories / melodies
    Toaru Majutsu no Index
    Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legendary Gambler Tetsua and Hajime No Ippo would be my recommendations. Legendary Gambler is old but still awesome :D

To be honest, a full list would be more appreciated, because we can always go deeper.

Anyway, Cy's list is good, but I'm just gonna drop this image here:

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gungrave, the aforementioned Hajime No Ippo. Wildcard would be Elfin Lied, people either love it or hate it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, which Thomas-G mentioned, it is futuristic and nerve wrecking. To me it is like a dark novel. Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon is a dark psychological drama. You might like some other Satoshi Kon stuff lots of his works is very surreal. Also you might like Ghost in the Shell it is cyber punk and also futuristic.

personally i'd recommend Jojo Bizzarre adventure, my no.1 manga ever. super power fighting scifi, if you know Hunter X Hunter, they are kinda like a same type but if you are talking about the smartness/creativity involved in their superpower fightings, Jojo is at least 10times better than Hunter.

Hunter X Hunter is a good one until now.....you can try the YuYu Hakusho, another classic from the same author.

the manga i mentioned above were pretty mainstream actually, except the fact that the people who read Jojo from its 1st generation must be at least near 30s now.

some others i'd recommend (whatever i can think of for now):
    Gantz
Berserk (kinda similar to Claymore, with more manly theme)
Kindaichi Case Files (oldie, real detective manga, gtfo Konan )
Battle royale(yes, the manga version is so much better)
Rurouni Kenshin (oldie, about samaurai, was quite mainstream back then)
Takehiko Inoue (slam dunk's author, mature theme samurai manga)

    Baccano!!!(Anime, a classics)
Full metal Panic(Anime, 1-3Seasons all awesome)
Mushishi(abit bored if you are not into slow paced anime)
Turn A Gundam is a underrated gem.
Have you try Macross yet lol

and if you are really into robot, defo have a look at Five Star Story. i came from a asian background so for me i am easier to get my hands on the manga/anime i want even when they are really old :P

    4chan? (Because "/a/" is mentioned)

But yeah I'd +1 for GiTS: Stand Alone Complex. Except just turn it off when the credits roll. You might not like the Tachikoma bit(s).

    FLCL (Gainax)
    Evangelion Rebirth 1.11 & 2.0 (Gainax)
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Gainax)
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (Gainax)

p.s. Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't referred to as "anime" in some circles, as it is an American production. Still leagues ahead of the majority of Japanese sh!te, though.

This thread has got awesome recommendations in it so I'mma let it run for a bit and then merge it with the recommendations thread so that it'll be here FOREVA.

I'd recommend Baccano! and Durarara!! in an instant. From the same makers, and they're superb.

Would also recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, it's really awesome stuff. Pretty cool psychological thriller. Have also heard nothing but good things about Bakemonogatari.

Higashi no Eden was a great series, but it's let down by the films that follow it.

    Mispelt baccano...

You'd probably enjoy FLCL if you watched it, even though it's a comedy.

If you have only watched Clannad, and not Clannad: After Story, that's like buying a chocolate bar and only eating the wrapper.

Cowboy Bebop is missing from that list, as is Samurai Champloo. They're good.

Evangelion 1.0 and 2.0 is Rebuild not Rebirth. Rebirth is an entirely different film that came out as 2 parts (Death and Rebirth), along with End of Evangelion, in 1997.

So for clarity's sake, Rebuild of Evangelion, of which only 1.0 and 2.0 have yet been released, is the most recent - and prettiest - version of Evangelion.

Would really recommend Macross the original series and Space Adventure Cobra. Cobra is a very good space opera from the 80's featuring the pirate Cobra and his fight against the evil Pirate's Guild, there are lots of ovas and a updated series from 2009. The best thing about it is that it comes from a time before moe, when women actually looked like women and also the hero is actually an adult. Which explains why the last two years have been an anime drought for me.

Also, the late great Satoshi Kon produced absolutely stellar work.
    Paprika is an absolute must-see!

    Basilisk,

Two rival clans of Ninja with a love story in the middle . I would highly recommend this one :)

I think just about everything I'd recommend has been mentioned, but I'll make a list all the same.
    Higurashi
    Baccano
    Durarara
    Bakemonogatari
Ookami kakushi (entertaining, but the plot was half-destroyed in between the VN and anime)
    Higashi no Eden
    Mushishi
    Panty and Stocking
    Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?
Lucky Star (Everyone has to watch this at some point)
Umineko (VN, not the anime, it's too good to spoil yourself with the mangled plot version)

My main recommendations would be Bakemonogatari, Baccano, Durarara and Higurashi. Umineko if you're bothered to read. Imo, watching those series should almost be compulsory.

Project Arms! 52 eps total. One of my favs but not very well known.Theres 1 post from 06 referring to it :).

If you're looking for a bleak drama it doesn't get much bleaker than Now and Then, Here and There. It's a deconstruction of the typical 'ordinary schoolkid falls into parallel universe' plot you find in things like Escaflowne and Fushigi Yuugi.

Actually, there are a few deconstructions you might like. Narutaru is a pretty dark look at mons anime like Pokemon and Digimon, and Bokurano by the same creator is actually bleaker than Evangelion in many ways. And the new anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica is like Sailormoon written by HP Lovecraft.

Oh, and Paranoia Agent. That's all.
