Should "Ming" Flanagan be arrested?

I saw that documentary on RTE last night following him around the canvass. Seems a down to earth bloke. However he has already admitted to growing his own weed. On the program cannabis was mentioned on a number of occasions by himself. He even said he was "going to have a joint with the blessing of his constituency tonight" to celebrate when he heard the count.

I see the humorous side and I know people will say "it's just weed"..."safer then tobacco" etc........but the fact is he has already admitted breaking the law by growing his own supply. He took it a stage further by saying he would smoke a joint at home. Both are against the law.

This circle may be difficult to square. He may well be arrested. All it takes is someone to give a statement to the Gardaí. What do you think?

I think the guards have better things to be doing, he openly has smoked all his life so its not like this is any relevent news story

You address the TD by his his proper title, ya little bollocks! :pac:

no I don't believe so, there's entire housing estates full of scobie drug dealers selling children heroine, I'd rather send the army in there and clean house.

Well if we've had TDs robbing us for BILLIONS!!!! and they haven't been arrested....

I can live with an Independent TD growing his own weed and smoking it himself.

If this Judge was never convicted (due to a very very silly technicality) and was able to keep his job, and claim his pension, then Ming should be left alone.

As long as his occasional smoke doesn't impede his work in the Dail, then leave him alone honestly.

he should be smoked for all he's worth

smoking a joint is not illegal

using any drug is not illegal

possession over a certain amount is illegal as is possession with intent to supply

Im not sure what the legality as far as growing is exactly but i imagine its the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,941 ✭✭✭thebigbiffo

i really like the precedent he's set here. i dont see how anybody from now on can be arrested for growing their own supply of weed while Luke is sitting in the Dail - think senator Norris bumming around while homosexuality was still illegal. widespread profiteering from drug use is a real criminal act - using your mild intoxicant of choice in the comfort of your own home with no risk to anyone else is rightly now starting be seen for what it is; a question of personal liberty.

    Go Ming!!

Possession of the plant is illegal, but sure as Bill Hicks says...'Doesn't the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit . . . unnatural?'

admitting to using drugs is not illegal, and it is not worth anything under law

Hes probally the most decent, hardworking honest person elected in a long time, best of luck to him! There might be a few dodgy smells coming from the smoking area in the dail bar though!

    Corrected.

I think he should be arrested. He admitted to breaking the law after all. Maybe if he was arrested it would set in motion a change in said law.. since it's utterly illogical.

[sarcasm]Yes definitely arrest him! He is a drug user who hasn't taken billions off the Irish people and looked after his friends in the banks while claiming ridiculous expenses. Away with him I say [/sarcasm]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,900 ✭✭✭Quality

I was listening to an interview with him recently... he was saying that he will continue to smoke his marijuana, like the other 100,000 people in this country do. As he is not the only one who is smoking the €600,000,000 worth of it that is being smuggled into the country each year.

he also is only taking half of his td salary the other €40,000 will be put towards recreational facilities in his constituency.

He came across a very noble, straight talking honest type of guy, This country could do with a few more of him.

I'd say that his arrest would spark a massive public reaction and put pressure on legislators to review the law.

Nice to see a bit of straight talking honesty from a politician. It's a pity there's not a few more like him going into the Dáil.

I'd say that his arrest would spark a massive public reaction and put pressure on legislators to review the law.

The only reaction it would spark is rabblemania on the Joe Duffy show.

"Lets go to line one where we have Mary in Portmarnock"

"Rabble rabble, destroying our kids Joe, rabble rabble, gateway drug Joe, rabble rabble, gotta go buy my daily bottle(s) of wine Joe"

Ideally it would bring about legislation change but after the headshop fiasco and the way they rushed in the new laws it will never happen.

    Go Ming!!

Yup. And if two FF TDs can walk away from drink driving offences (a crime that can seriously endanger the life of an innocent third party), and one can cripple a nurse and walk away with a fine , an FG TD can attempt to do the same and then threaten a Garda for trying to take their keys from them; if the Gardai go after this, it'll tell us a huge amount about our justice system/inner circle in this country.

Apologies everyone for my appalling syntax/sentence structure. Too lazy to edit/recompile it.:)

It's not that hard to understand, really. I want to get locked at the age of 15 so I can either break the law and risk getting punished and basically saying "feck off" to the country I "care about" or I can leave and be happy knowing that I'm somewhere more suited for me.
