Hey guys im selling my car at the moment and i posted it on adverts and gumtree. I received an email from gumtree from a buyer saying they are interested in buying my car, this is when it got weird. Supposedly he works for the government so i cant contact him through phone calls or meet him in person. He will arrange a person to collect the car from me. Also he is buying for a friend and wants to pay me through paypal. Iv never used paypal but this sounds seriously dodgy

Did he ask genuine questions about the state of the car and it's history or was it all that cloak and dagger BS? Did he mention a test drive?

Almost all Govt. departments have direct dial to the individual's extension so there's no excuse not to take a phone call. A few years ago a civil servant was caught running a string of hookers from his desk, he was rumbled when a journalist doing some research recognised the first few digits of the phone number of the 'massage parlour', it was the Cumberland St. Labour Exchange!

Even if you had to go through a switchboard to reach him, buying a car over the phone is hardly going to get him sacked, half the civil service will be on the phones next week betting on Cheltenham. This is definitely a scam, run a mile.

Ha yeah it has to be a scam. He never asked once about the car, just that his "friend" would love it and he's buying it as a surprise. He mentioned something about a government convoy, i was just baffled at the convoluted message i received

My Other half got a similiar email when trying to sell his car. It's called nigerian scam or something like that, you can google it. Only in his email the person was from another country (can't remember which). He also wanted to pay through paypal and didn't even ask anything about the state of it.

Do you by any chance have any tickets in the spanish lottery, or have you sent money to the prince of nigeria?

    This is an obvious scam.

You should trace his email header details which I did and found him his email to originate from Nigeria.
Use www.spamcop.net to find out how to get his email header details for your email client.
Then use http://www.ipligence.com/geolocation to see where the IP is from.

Ultimately GumTree is a ****e site for allowing these dicks to get through in the first place. It's not that difficult to stop them getting in.

I even tried to inform gumtree but there crap form wouldn't submit so my scammer is still active on gumtree!!
