Very unlikely @ €16k. Cheapest ones on carzone are asking €18/19k and they are even high milers. Low tax diesels are in high demand and diesel A4s have strong resale values.

He will be lucky to get one for over 20k. Even the UK ones are holding value very well.

Thats a nice motor. I think the A4 is totally overrated and expensive.

Lovely car but that engine is terrible, gearing is wrong with noticably turbo lag, unrefined and not very good on juice. Apparently they also suffer from head gasket failure. Best avoided.

and why A6 is less attractive than A4 both being 2 l diesel ?

    Who mentioned the A6?

But to answer the question, I'd expect because an '08 A6 was the last of the old model and had €630pa motor tax compared to €156 on the '09.

To the point that Chris made, my understanding is that all 08 A4/A6 TDis get taxed on the emissions system.

For cars purchased new in Ireland from Jan to June 08, they started life being taxed by engine size, but could transfer to the emissions based system if desired, ie from July 08 onwards they could be taxed on the cheaper of the two schemes.

This six month window does not apply to 08 cars imported after 1st July 08, ie if you import a car today that was registered in March 08, it will be taxed on the emissions system regardless of whether this is to your advantage or not.

Correct, but the A6 2.0TDi was in band E in 2008 and reduced to band B in 2009 with the introduction of the facelift and CR engines.

this is from the motortax office pdf

A private car first registered abroad between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008
inclusive and subsequently registered in Ireland will be taxed on whichever is the lesser
of the motor tax rates based engine (cc) or CO2 emissions.
A private car first registered abroad after 1 July 2008 and subsequently registered in
Ireland will be taxed on the CO2 rate

Even if motor tax was 630 vs 156 it would make 2400e in 5 years, it's not an answer :D

It's not a logical answer, but Irish people aren't logical when it comes to motor tax...

Congratulations. Out of curiosity, do you notice much difference between driving + using the passat and the A4 ( assuming you took the a4 for a test drive etc )? A colleague has a passat + reckons its virtually as good as an A4.
They are both made on the same platform etc he says, by the same group of companies and are roughly the same size etc.

'08 A4 and Passat aren't on the same chassis, and definitely don't drive similarly.

The Passat and A4 have been on seperate chassis for donkeys years at this stage....

This is one of the great myths out there that needs debunking, along with myth that the Ford Mondeo and Mazda 6 are the exact same car (they are most certainly not - they actually have nothing in common bar I think some of the petrol engines)!

The B5 Passat still shared the platform somewhat with the A4.
The new ones are different in that the Audi still has an in-line engine, the Passat's is transverse since the B6. The Passat is a lot bigger inside as a result. They do drive quite similarly though, despite the differences in platform. The A4 has a slightly better turn in, the Passat if anything is slightly better over rough surfaces. Both are like driving with oven gloves and bubble wrap they're so numb in the steering and chassis feedback.
The Mondeo and Mazda 6 are different, but not completely different. They share most of the platform, but Mazda went their own way with the front suspension as they weren't keen on the Ford setup. They also had to supply Ford with some petrol engines after some of the Ford pieces of dung fell apart.
