Trailer double wheels

I don't know where this should go, but someone might be able to help me here.

The purchase of a new quad has seen me resurect an old single axel car trailer to tow behind the quad. I've started to resheet the trailer and hope to have it ready in a week or 2. Main frame of the trailer, axel, wheels, drawbar and body are in good shape. just the wood on it needs replacing which I am doing with chequerplate and I'll give it a respray.

The thing is, I want to know if it would be possible to put double wheels on the trailer as most of its work will be offroad and double wheels would mean that I could do a lot of work with it like bringing firewood off the land and bringing turf off the bog.

Is there any easy way to put a second wheel on each side??
The concept that I have in my head is the way that i put double wheels on an old MF35 at home - I have studs on it which have outer threads. They screw on and hold the first wheel in place and then the second wheel just fits onto the outer threads. But I have searched and have been unable to find those studs to fit car wheels??

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Reilig

If I was doing it I'd look at joining the wheels together with long bolts, like some other types of duals work

But to be honest I'd be more in favour of putting a new axle underneath with quad tyres.

it's not cheap, but would probably be a much better job, more suitable tyres and much lighter weight too.

If it's for own use off road you can do it how you like but don't be tempted to do any welding with the tyres on the rims.

There's some scary footage by I think Bridgestone, of a truck tyre exploding long after the rim was touched briefly by a welder. The tyre burns unseen internally then explodes violently

You can get threaded bar joiners like extra long nuts but whether they'd be strong enough I don't know.

If money were no object, plenty of ex British army quad trailers for sale (and quads) at Withams http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/,30,/28587/Logic_.htm

    Thanks guys,

I have the wheels so it really wasn't going to cost me anything.

Quad wheels under a trailer would really be no match for double car wheels in terms of spreading the weight of the load. I might look to see can I find a wider car wheel that might fit it.

I've looked at withams before, but the quad trailers that they are selling are so expensive - and most are only ply sheeted. I could but a brand new fully galvanised quad tipping trailer here for much less than anything that they have.

could you put on wheels of a modern car? they tend to be quite wide.

That looks to be my best and cheapest option

perhaps a 4x4 wheel, if you have the clearence, if it can match the hub.

They tend to be big and heavy, I think Relig needs width more than anything, a couple of F1 racing slicks would do nicely!

That would be the business allright.

But there are some older cars like Mercs and other big cars that might be possible to find scrapped. Some of them had wheels that were 8 or 9 inches wide. Thread depth won't be important.

This would be my solution, see drawing.
Remove original studs, drill out holes to Diameter 14 or preferably 16.
fit long bolts, use spacer between rims.
Spacer would really need same taper on it as original nut has.

As you can see I've toyed with this idea before myself :)

What about twin wheel axel from a Toyota Dyna or other light lorry /van.
    Must be cheap from breakers.

It would be too big for pulling behind a quad

Just wondering reilig did you find a way of setting up the trailer with double wheels? Have been toying with the idea myself for the last few days.

Nope. I abandoned it. I ended up buying a proper quad trailer off ebay from the UK. It has small wide wheels and I can pull 400kg in it. For the price that I got it, it wouldn't have been worth my while doing up the old trailer. Over a year on and I can confirm that it was a good solid piece of kit.

Are those the knobby quad tyres? How has it fared in the bog for you?
