Operating System not Found - Need advice on a new SSD for a Dell Mini 9

    Hi all..

I've got the dreaded Operating System not Found message on the bootup of my Dell Mini 9 (8GB SSD).

The HD is at the top of the boot order, and I can see a "media test failure, check cable" message which suggests that the netbook is trying to go through the boot order and is ending at the boot via network option. If I disable that option, I get a simple Operating System not Found message.

I opened the back of the netbook and checked that the SSD is secure, which it is. Ive had windows 7 on the netbook for the last 6 months or so without a problem.

    Any ideas at all?

Restart and keep pressing f8. Choose safemode if available or repair windows etc. You will need admin password for repair I think.

Pop in Ubuntu live cd (from usb) and see if it sees the hard drive. Also check the boot flags.

The mini has no CD drive unfortunately!

No joy in getting into safe mode at all.. Pressing the fn K keys (F8) has no effect.

Ubuntu can be booted from a USB stick.

That's why "(from usb)" is in brackets :P Download the ISO file and put it on a memory stick.

    Im downloading UBUNTU for Netbooks.

Can you give me the basics on how to get it to install UBUNTU? Theres nothing on the HD that I need, so I can do it straight away. Is it just a matter of saving the downloaded file to a USB and then setting the netbook to boot from the USB stick?

Put it on usb stick, boot from usb, select "boot from cd" or run from cd or something(in your case usb), but it won't mess with your pc or change anything, its perfectly safe.

Ive set the USB to the top of the boot order, and moved the Ubuntu ISO file to the USB stick. Booted the netbook, and Im getting "No bootable Partition in table"..

It's not as simple as simply putting the ISO onto the usb stick you have to make it bootable.

to make it bootable use this:
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/univers...easy-as-1-2-3/
Simply choose a Live Linux Distribution, the ISO file, your Flash Drive and, Click Install. Other features include; Persistence (if available), and the ability to format the flash drive (recommended) to ensure a clean install. Upon completion, you should have a ready to run bootable USB Flash Drive with your select Linux version installed.

I may be in trouble I think.. I brought my external cd drive home from work and tried to reinstall windows on the netbook. It spotted one single blank partition, and could not write anything to it.

My SSD seems to have left the building. Replacement from China on eBay for 70 quid

Sure thats almost on the way to iPad money! (Thats what I'll be telling herself anyway!)

How large is the ssd? I presume it's on the small side?

If you still wanted to use the netbook, you could buy a class 10 16GB SD card and pop it into the card reader and install an OS on that. I'm not so sure windows will install, but Ubuntu definitely will. It mightn't be the fastest of options, but for ~20 it's certainly cheap.

I upgraded the SSD in the mini 9 that the missus has some time ago. If this is of any help, I used a Kingspec 16GB ssd and it worked fine. You can get one from the states on ebay for €56 shipped (link) Good luck!

Cheers. I just hope it is the SSD thats gone in it now and not anything else. I just spent €68 quid on a 32GB replacement from eBay so I'll hope for the best!
