Why can't the government settle for a fixed amount of tax per litre of petrol, instead of proffiting from every increase in oil price ?

    ?

They do set a fixed amount of tax for every litre of petrol.

    Simplistic version:
Supposing you open your front door and decided to let people in at a fiver a head.
Your expecting/want 200 and BANG, someone decides to take advantage and brings along 2000 mates.
Would you be impressed and be/feel ripped off and taken advantage of?

With every increase from the oil companies, you can be positive they are making sure they are getting their profit cut!

They don't have a fixed AMOUNT though.

It's a percentage, so therefore when the core price rises we get screwed some more.

Correct. I should have been more clearer. A fixed percentage amount.
Edit: Someone says not - I'm confused. O' well thats tax systems for you.
(I think they do it on purpose!)

    Just an observation really ...........

I'm finding it really strange how little fuss is being made over it. I remember before when prices went up to a euro and fell back a bit again. People were going crazy about the price, protests organised etc. I'm shocked at the prices filling up at the station lately but I seem to be in a bubble of my own. Haven't heard many significant complaints this time and prices are a lot higher. Not advocating anything, it's just an observation. Are people moaning less these days? It sounds very un Irish not to have a pointless moan about stuff.

I often refer back to that time myself when throwing around some anecdotes, the good olde days when the country came to a standstill over 0.99 cents a litre!! OPEC are ****

    No it's not ...

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/excise/duties/excise-duty-rates.html

EDIT: There's an additional 2c per litre Carbon Tax on top of those figures as well, also subject to VAT at 21%

There's VAT as well (on the total cost plus duty), of course, which will increase (in absolute terms) as the base price increases.

I'm not sure how the tax system works on petrol (other than upwards only), but it strikes me that the rule of thumb is to rip people off as much as possible, to bring in as much revenue as possible, and completely ignore the amount of taxes we already pay when we buy cars, or pay tax on them yearly.

It's a bugbear of mine lately, compounded by spending time on the continent, and seeing expensive petrol there, but car prices a good 10,000 or more less than here (obviously depending on engine size/brand etc). There, tax is applied at the pump. And well, that's it.

We're just ripped off on all-sides. It's much easier to stick to the draconian, complicated system instead of thinking in straight, sensible lines and creating a decent system

(I shall now get down off my soapbox and go back to grumbling at the computer screen from far away! :o:o)

It is not Opecs fault if significant amount of petrol money goes to government. They sell the same petrol to US for the same price and per gallon price much cheaper over there.

We will not see taxes lowered with the cureent climate.

Rest assured if they lower the duty on fuel, there will be a corollorary increase in motor tax
